“He was wearing no head protection.” - I'm no English major but I think an English Major by the name of Brent would say this is a bad statement.
Motorcycle driver killed in Vernon County crash

A 45-year-old Stewartville, Minn., man died as the result of injuries sustained when his motorcycle went off Hwy. 56 in the town of Viroqua and struck a tree, Thursday at 4:23 p.m.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, Richard J. Arneson was eastbound on Hwy. 56 just east of Lewison Road when he lost control of his motorcycle while negotiating a curve.
Arneson’s motorcycle continued off the shoulder of the road and went airborne, striking a tree before it went down an embankment.
“The cause of the fatal injuries was the impact with the tree,” Sheriff John Spears said. “He was wearing no head protection.”
The sheriff’s department noted that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
“That’s a bad combination — alcohol, a motorcycle, no helmet and speed,” Spears said. “Our investigation is continuing. This is a one-vehicle, single fatality, but we will cover all bases.”
Spears said that the sheriff’s department is collecting video evidence from a Viroqua tavern that Arneson visited prior to the crash.
This marks VernonCounty’s ninth traffic fatality for the year of 2012.
The accident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office.

Grand Rapids couple injured in motorcycle crash
A husband and wife from Grand Rapids were injured Sunday when their motorcycle ran off the road and struck a downed tree in Crow Wing County.
By: News Tribune staff, Duluth News Tribune
A husband and wife from Grand Rapids were injured Sunday when their motorcycle ran off the road and struck a downed tree in Crow Wing County.
The Minnesota State Patrol reported that a 1994 Honda trike-style motorcycle operated by Donald Boyer, 68, was northbound on Minnesota Highway 6 a couple miles north of Crosby just after 1 p.m. when Boyer started pulling over to the side of the road. The motorcycle lurched and went downhill into a grassy ditch, and struck a downed tree. Boyer and his wife, Donnell Boyer, 65, were thrown from the motorcycle.
The Boyers, who both were wearing helmets, were taken to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby with what the Patrol called non-life-threatening injuries.
The Crosby Police Department and Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office were among the other agencies assisting at the accident scene.

Below are bolded updates to the story about the tragic death of Fridley Police Officer Barry Pankonin, 38, of Plymouth.
Pankonin died in a fatal motorcycle crash that happened at approximately 3:09 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21. According to Plymouth Police, officers responded to the report of a personal injury crash involving a motorcycle in the area of Kingsview Lane and 13th Avenue North in Plymouth.
On arrival, officers located a male victim who had sustained serious injuries. The victim was transported by ambulance to North Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 4:15 p.m.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's report said Pankonin "died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident."
The report confirms that Pankonin's home address was at 14730 13th Avenue North, which was less than 50 feet away from the crash site.
At the time of the crash, Pankonin had been alone on the motorcycle and had been wearing a helmet. Plymouth Capt. Jeff Swiatkiewicz said police do not believe there is any indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.
Plymouth Police Chief Michael Goldstein said the following about the investigation into the accident:
"The case is still under investigation," Goldstein said. "The State Patrol’s Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting as they do on all fatal crashes. It would be premature and irresponsible for the police department to either confirm or deny what has been learned through any hearsay."
Once we have the State Patrol’s report, our investigators will be able to close out the complete case and we will be able to release more information at that time, he said.
"This was a tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased, his family and friends along with the members of the Fridley Police Department," Goldstein said.
According to the
Star Tribune
, Pankonin is survived by his partner, Scott Stevenson, his parents and three siblings: a brother and two sisters.
Fridley officials learned at a debriefing Wednesday that a tenative schedule has Pankonin's funeral 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 with visitation beforehand and on Friday, Aug. 24.

I never posted that one because of absolutely zero details about the accident. Only 50 feet from home makes this very interesting.
I found this from the local Sun newspaper:
"According to reports, Pankonin’s motorcycle went off the road and struck a tree at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, shortly after he left his home in Plymouth. No other vehicles or persons were involved in the accident."
I wonder if there was an equipment issue, making the investigation more diligent than most.

Either an equipment issue or a sudden medical problem. Whatever the cause it is truly tragic.
One of my neighbors was injured over the weekend (three cervical vertebrae broken) after hitting a deer on Stagecoach in Afton, perhaps a mile from where we both live. He never wears a helmet and is incredibly fortunate as he was thrown from the bike into the woods.

Bummer. I swear the deer are becoming the most common denominator of the accidents I hear about the last year or so.
