Deer Hunting Starts
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:53:08 PM »
As you spend these few weekends cramming in your last rides of the season, please remember the deer season starts this weekend.  This means pickups parked just off the road around that blind corner, hunters crossing the roads, deer running all over the place and stuff falling out of pickups.  Something to keep in mind.

I'm going to wear my blaze orange riding suit, just so some trigger happy hunter doesn't think that I'm a fast deer crossing the road.  And I should probalby take the fake atlers off of my helmet...

Just so everyone remembers: there is no elk season in Minnesota.

what are you suppose to do if you see deer ??
slow, honk, flash lights, swerve, get your shoulder ready ??

never came into one on a bike, hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question.

Thanks,
Joel

Reducing your speed differential would be a good place to start.  Good luck with any attempt to out-think the deer.

brace for impact!  i took one out last year down in welch, 3 hit the ditch and one was just stuck in a stupor and couldnt figure out where he wanted to go.  luckily i just tagged him in the head with my frame slide.  killed it instantly, an inch further it coulda been me that was down for the count.  i dont think there is any foolproof answer, other then dont panic!

Horns will do the trick......

Horns do nothing but make them more freaked out.  You might scare ones right in front but you also might cause others to run into your line.

No kidding; they have no brains to speak of.

The only thing I know to do is to hit the brakes, hard.

In a car you are typically better off hitting an animal rather than swerve as the ditch is generally more dangerous.  I don't know what the best thing to do with on a bike when confronted with something as big as a deer other than to stop.

At least on a bike we have some room to move without going off the road or even into another lane.

They hate loud noises so by hitting the horn when there's deer in the ditch or up ahead they usually run off.. However if
You got a whole pack of deer running right  in front of you there's no a whole lot you can do but brake and  pray to god that you miss em

Suit yourself.  I don't apply the word "usually" for deer (besides the phrase "they are usually stupid").  I've watched startled deer run right into the road, when they were startled by noise from the road.  My current tact is to try to be stealth and avoid any movement or sounds that would make them react.
