General Banter / They will find you eventually.

I'll admit a period in my life where there would be a fleeting thought of applying a bit more throttle if the lights came on at a sufficient distance.  I think this story effectively demonstrates how a combination of technology and social media can be used to ruin your day.

Starting this coming Mon Sept 18th, the interesection of 60/63 at Zumbro Falls will be closed due to construction.  The East/West detour on 60 are actually a nice ride.

General Banter / Hwy 16

Hwy 16 between Lanesboro and Rushford is now open.  It was completely rebuilt so hopefully it will be very smooth and better banked in the tight corners.

General Banter / Auto body painted parts
« on: April 07, 2013, 07:41:53 PM »
Hello,

Marital unit backed her vehicle into my vehicle today and ruined both bumper covers.  I found bumper covers to be fairly cheap for ones not painted.  Is there a place in the cities that can paint the bumper covers with proper paint match codes?

Shouldn't come as a surprise.  But it will hopefully be a really neat road when it's reopened.

General Banter / Curt Gran (CrazyKZ) - 6/17/2012
« on: June 17, 2012, 01:50:55 PM »
Some of you know Curt.  It's with a very heavy heart to inform of his passing during the MN1K yesterday.  Apparently Curt collided with a horse trailer in the mid afternoon.  No other details are available.

Curt was a devoted LD rider and perennial participant of the big rallies (Iron Butt).  Curt rode a Honda ST1300 so I had contact with him on multiple occasions and various internet forums.  I learned many technical details about LD riding and gadgetry from Curt.

I wish I knew more detail.  Curt was a very good rider, but did not carry any bravado about LD riding.  He knew it was risky and treated LD riding very seriously, which makes his passing all that more harder to understand.

RIP Waffle Boy.

General Banter / Goodhue Cty 7 (Welch road)

Be advised that Cty 7 suffered some damage in the area around Welch due to flooding from yesterday's rains.   It sounds like the road is still open but closed to 1 lane in some areas.

General Banter / Crashes Reported in the Media
« on: May 01, 2012, 10:52:17 PM »
The purpose of this thread is to post local news postings on recent crashes involving motorcycles that occur in the region.

The idea is to provide insight to the cause of crashes which occur on many roads familiar to us.  I must have read 5 or 6 accident reports on County O last year for example.  The causes of some of these accidents sometimes defy logic (a few years back, two bikes both went into the ditch when they swerved into each other while the riders were talking.)

Please refrain from posting "Hey, check this out!" videos, exhibition riding videos and gruesome photos.  Also please refrain from posting disrespectful, provocative or personal commentary about individual riders in the news postings.

The purpose is for learning about rider or vehicle errors and how the media reports the incidents.  This is not for feeding our darker human needs.

Thanks.

General Banter / Now you can be a "Flagger"
« on: April 24, 2012, 06:44:56 PM »
While thumbing through this months American Motorcyclist (AMA) magazine, I found out about a new certificate program that was filed under the Minnesota House (file 2008).  This program would allow riders to act as flaggers on motorcycle group rides.  A properly certified rider would have priority over traffic signals and stop signs in order to direct riders in an orderly manner through controlled intersections.

https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bin/bldbill.php?bill=H2008.0.html&session=ls87

I recall a thread about this either here or on MNSBR a few years ago that drew some rather heated arguments (couldn't have been here, right?) If I recall, there was a sense of entitlement by some riders who think it's perfectly acceptable to halt traffic for large groups of bikes.  Clearly there exists no legal entitlement that allows riders to act as traffic cops, but perhaps soon one can presumably be certified to be a flagger.

My guess is this won't pass simply because there is no precedence that allows a civilian to proactively control traffic.  Even funeral processions require an officer to provide the traffic control at intersections.  If it does pass, I could see designated flaggers on our group  rides.  We'll have to stick with the fast guys though (Vince, Ray, Tony, Denyse, get your flags ready.)  :D

General Banter / Ray, I only have one thing to say
« on: March 30, 2012, 08:36:33 AM »
Ray, Happy Birthday!

Take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments with the MN-MSTA over the years.  You did a remarkable job transitioning the group from the the old newsletter days "back in the day" to a web based culture.

We've had our differences but on my own reflection, it's hard to imagine where things would be today if you hadn't started MN-Sportbike, then MN-MSTA websites.

I am amazed at your resolve.  After that initial spike of heavy participation with MN-Sportbike, the subsequent waning would have had me packing up and leaving it for someone else to bury.  You  hung in there to resurrect the recent interest.  As much as I often thought about dropping my membership, I know I will be missing some continuity in my life.  I hope you get some pride and satisfaction that you provide this continuity for several of us.

So take this day....or no...the whole weekend to step back and allow yourself the satisfaction of what you have accomplished here.  You deserve it.  I hope everyone would take the same moment to thank Ray for his often overlooked and under-appreciated efforts.

P.S.  I made a copy of this.  If you nuke it, I will keep posting it.  Allow yourself a day to sit back and accept everyone's gratitude!

General Banter / Howard Steiger
« on: December 24, 2011, 07:10:14 PM »
Only a few old-timers will know that name.  Howard and his wife Sharon were Minnesota HSTA Directors in the early and mid 90's.  Howard is the one who pestered me at a few moto-gatherings to sign up for the HSTA.  The internet had not yet hit the mainstream so Howard and Sharon had to recruit with brute effort, putting mailings on Hondas parked at gatherings.  Sharon and Howard both rode ST1100s with license plates, HIS ST and HER ST.  Howard worked at 3M, but rode all over the region on the weekends.  When he retired, they moved to Nevada and Howard really started cranking up the miles.

According to the mileage tracker (http://www.st-owners.com/index.php?page=Mileage) on the ST-Owners forum, Howard just cracked 100,000 miles for the YEAR.  You read that correct, Howard put 6 digits on the ODO in one calendar year.  Those of you who attend national MSTA events, might have met Howard.  I know he tries to show up at Twistar when he can.  He has no shortage of tales about having to help dealers move bikes around.  ;)  I'd only dream of being able to put even half those miles on a year.

Bike Help / Stubborn Dust Seal
« on: December 10, 2011, 12:52:17 PM »
Late this season I discovered the factory dust seal deformed on one side of my 07 ST1300 front wheel.  I removed the axle and spacers and figured out what must have happened was the dust seal had somehow spun in place and sort of melted.  My guess is this seal must not have been properly seated from the factory.  The important thing here is the seal never detached from the wheel and it was still sealing.

However when replacing the seal, it would not come out easily and I wound up with a fair amount of seal material in the seating trench.  This trench is very narrow and somewhat difficult to dig anything out, let alone material that appears to be stubbornly bound to the aluminum surfaces.  I've been successful at getting probably 50% of the material out of that trench but a substantial amount remains to prevent proper seating of a new seal.  I've been trying to dig it out with an exacto blade and application of Goo Gone but with only limited success.  Any ideas on how to make that material loosen up for easier removal?

For Sale/Wanted to Buy / Bulk kerosene
« on: December 01, 2011, 06:58:55 PM »
I'm looking for 5 gallons (bulk, or close, price).  I drained our neighborhood hardware store, at 90th and Penn in Bloomington, of their last 1.5 gallons last week.  They said they would get more in this week.  Tonight the clerk told me the owner "knows it's out but sometimes lacks the motivation to get their drum refilled immediately."  Lame, guess the low temps wasn't a clue that customers would be needing some?  So I'm looking for a place around the south metro that has a barrel or fuel pump of kero, thanks.
