Audiologists are looking forward to your future business (http://children.webmd.com/guide/hearing-loss-mp3s). Yep, it's true. They do call the 18-40 year old group, the "MP3 Generation." You are going to be big money makers for the hearing aid manufacturers, since you're going deaf faster than my generation. More 30 year olds are hearing impaired than 60 year-olds, percentage wise. Get ready for a lifetime of "get an ear horn" jokes from the few of you who can hear.

What are your recommendations, still staying within the MN laws?  One noise canceling earbud with music only?  One earbud and one earplug?  Two ear plugs?

I have noticed the ringing in my ears after a long ride.  At this point it still goes away, would like to prevent it from being permanent!

Looks like a fun ride!

This is where my nickname comes from (smokechasing with the DNR), and what I get to do now for fun (Pine Island Fire Department)!

Hopefully our next ride together will be longer than our last one!

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

I need to get out and try some on for size...

My short list so far is:

VFR
Falco
FZ1

Any others that have been missed, let me know.

However, if you think a GSXR750 is heavy I'm not even going to mention my bike.  In my opinion it is the ultimate long distance sport bike.

Dry weight on mine is around 460 lbs.  Heavier compared to newer GSXR's (my friend's 2005 750 is less than 360 lbs.)

Your bike is the FJR 1300, correct? Does the extra weight affect the performance in the corners?

Why not buy a gel ed seat and a taller windshield. It makes a big difference.

I have thought about a custom seat.  I would also have to look into handle bar risers to sit up straighter as well as switching to a standard style grip.

IMHO Any of the VFR's will do the trick, a little more upright, comfy, perform well, and not that spendy.

I have been looking at the VFR's.  They look interesting.

You might find it a tad underpowered coming from a GSXR though (assuming the 93 model was fast and light.)

How aggressive of a rider are you?  Your size and weight would be suited for a well maintained used ST1100 or ST1300 as well, but it's a porker for tight cornering.

I would call it fast, but not light!  How aggressive is a tough question.  I am a brand new rider, but precision driving in the corners and using all of the tires is more appealing to me then fast and straight.

Some of the naked type sport bikes tend to not have really low clipons (or have actual handle bars) and more room for the legs.   I have a nice 2004 919 i'd be willing to sell with adjustable rearsets....  :)

Z1000's are nice or maube an FZ1, etc etc.

Sheldon

I am spoiled with the full faring and windshield on the GSX-R, not sure if I could do a naked style bike...

I ride an Aprilia Shiver on occasional long distance runs.
Love it.  It is very comfortable and stands quite tall too.

It's extremely nimble, very torquey, and packed with technology (ride-by-wire, tri-mapping... ect, etc.)
There are tall touring screens available, but I roll with a small bikini Puig screen.
Givi makes mountings for luggage and Saddlemen make very nice bags to match.

As a 750cc L-twin it's not the fastest in the pack beyond 80 MPH, but that's not so important to me.
There are very few in this State with very limited local dealership support, but with AF1 as an information source and parts supplier it really doesn't matter.

I saw one on craigslist for around $6k.
Hope that helps.

I'll have to look more into these.  A little higher then I wanted to spend at this time...

I'll throw out a vote for my current ride, a 2000-2002 Ninja ZX-6R (and 2005+ (?) as the ZZR-600); highly capable, good range (200 miles on 4.5 gallons), comfortable for the right people, and a great value.

a.s.

How is the Ninja for power?  I would be a little worried dropping down to a 600 from the 750.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and keep them coming!

I need some advice/opinions...

Currently I have a 1993 Suzuki GSX-R 750 that I LOVE to ride.  But, looking at routes for group rides on this site, need to find something more comfortable for long rides.  I would like to attend with my GSX-R, but I would also like to be able to walk the next day!

I do not want to give up the performance of the sport bike.  I also need something to fit my 6'4", 220 lb body...

Oh, and of course I want it as inexpensive as possible!

Any comments, suggestions, advice is welcome.

Thanks,
Greg

Welcome Smokey!  I grew up in Zumbrota (now live in Bloomington), my folks still reside there.
Thanks for the welcome.  I look forward to meeting some of you in person.  Next time you are down this way visiting, let me know and we can hook up for a ride.

Hi Greg,
welcome to the site!  I'm from Byron, and do alot of local rides as well as SE/MN and WISC.  If you and your wife ever want to meet up for a local ride, I can give you a tour of some of the better roads in the area.
~Denyse
That would be great!  Don't need much of an excuse or much notice for a ride. Send me a message or text me when when you are heading out. (507) 261-2276

Welcome! Watch the "Rides" subforum to see when and where people are
riding. There just happens to be a ride this Sunday through Winona and
Houston Counties. Hook up with us for a mile or a hundred miles. These
rides are very flexible.
That sounds like a great ride! Unfortunately it is Cheese Fest weekend in Pine Island.  Fire Department responsibilities all day...

Welcome Greg, I see you made it over ......
Thanks for the invite/information!

General Banter / Re: Helmet Laws
« on: June 08, 2012, 11:02:46 AM »
From a emergency responders perspective (Firefighter/EMT for 17 years...)

As much as some like to argue that wearing a helmet is a personal choice that only affects the individual, I would point out that there are additional dangers for others when choosing to not wear a helmet.

In a general sense, crashes are more serious when a helmet is not worn.  More serious crashes take more time to clear from the roadways. More time to clear from the roadway means more time that emergency workers are in a high risk setting.  The more time we are in a high risk setting the better the chances those same careless drivers that do not see motorcycles crash into our firetrucks, ambulances, police cars, or other motorists slowing for the accident.

From a purely selfish standpoint, wear your helmet!

[img]Hello!

I truly am a newbie, first bike purchased this spring...  But, the bug has bitten hard!  I have ridden about 3000 miles this spring already, bought my wife a bike and my oldest son a scooter.  I am enjoying learning more about riding techniques and styles, and I look forward to getting on some group rides.

I live in Pine Island (20 miles North of Rochester) look me up for a ride if you are in the area!
