General Banter / The $2500 Track Day
« on: July 15, 2013, 11:16:15 AM »
Woof.  It also looks like they are planning to run bikes and cars at the same dates.  Wonder how this will go?

General Banter / Helmet Laws
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:55:45 AM »
According to the MN Brain Injury Alliance (http://www.braininjurymn.org/org-pdf/public-policy/Who-Pays-ExecutiveSummary-Final.pdf), motorcycle-related traumatic brain injuries have cost MN taxpayers $40M in hospital charges over the last 10 years.  This figure does not include the cost to tax payers of long-term care or rehabilitation as a result of these injuries.  According to the above article, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of TBI in a single vehicle motorcycle accident by 41%, and by 25% in multiple vehicle accidents.

I make a personal choice to wear a helmet every time I ride.  Even so, the risk of all those motorcyclists who choose not to wear one are priced into my insurance premiums.  Beyond that, my tax dollars fund their care should they suffer a TBI as a result of their decision and can't afford their medical care.

My first choice to resolve this issue would be to allow the market to take care of it.  Individuals who don't wear a helmet should have to report their decision to their insurance company and carry the extra coverage needed to hedge the extra risk they are taking.  This would also have a two-fold benefit in that the extra cost would encourage more riders to wear a helmet, and at the same time make it less likely that those who don't will end up getting care on the taxpayer's dime.

What am I missing?  For the libertarians on the board, what is your response to my feeling that I am being forced to pay for risk that I am not taking?

Safety and Riding Tips / Sharing Safety "Moments"
« on: April 04, 2012, 11:53:02 AM »
Every year on this and other forums, we have riders who crash or have close calls.  Last year we had a couple discussions here about accidents that took place.  Some of the conversation was around supporting the injured rider, some was about the specific detail of what happened and what we could learn, and some was just about drama.

When I’ve crashed in the past, I haven’t publically posted the details of what happened because I don’t want the drama. I also don’t want people Monday-morning QB-ing my actions when I know what happened based on my perspective and that of the riders I was with.  Anything else is conjecture, with the possible exception of video.

I also think that when I’ve crashed or had close calls I’ve learned from it and come out a better rider on the other side (mentally if not physically...).  Starting this season, any incidents or close calls that I have I will post a brief recap of (not incidents of other riders I ride with, just my own).  The recap will contain bulleted facts about what happened and contributing factors, along with any key takeaways I had.  I'm also thinking about doing this retrospectively.

Anybody else interested in doing the same?

Wow.  I'd like to say that I'd support my kid to follow his passion no matter what but seeing this today really makes me reconsider.  I know that Solis and Pascarella are not your average kids but where do you draw the line as a parent?  The stakes for this kind of incident are on a different level.  For reference both kids are 16.

General Banter / Stoner Interview

Pretty decent interview with Stoner.  Parts are his normal blah blah blah but he's got some interesting stuff to say about his style of riding, the current Bridgestones and the 990/800/1000 switches.

Anybody seen it?  Just watched it and was pleasantly surprised.  It spends the first chunk of the movie on the McDonalds case (there are pictures of an old lady's nether regions - you've been warned...) but then moves on to spend the bulk of the time on broader topics within the legal system.  Pretty interesting.
