I have found that 10 is fine on "flood days."  Run down to 35 and make a U-turn back up.

Even running the opposite direction than the major traffic can be slow.

I wasn't aware of air patrols during these runs.  Good to know.

Bicycling on the good roads a lot shows me that quite a few drivers cross the center line also, another potential danger.

An excellent point.

Many drivers cross the center line on the inside of turns.  Often these are not aggressive drivers, but drivers that are uncomfortable with cornering; they overcompensate.

This often occurs on simple freeway turns as well; drivers hugging or crossing the lane on the inside of turns.

Great response, Ray.

The question and your response should be a sticky.

I know you are asking about formal signs/markers, but when people are talking about corners they often refer to all sorts of "markers," cracks, the little painted "H" shape before Turn 3, etc.

I am one of the wimps.  As I approach turn 1 I brake a tad.  I am at 155+ MPH in my Corvette Z06 toward the end of the straight and I am not willing to enter 1 at 155-160 on street tires, even the wonderful F1 Supercars.  135 MPH or so is perfectly adequate for this occasional weekend warrior.

I have no idea how to handle it on a bike.

General Banter / Suggestions for riding books/videos?
« on: August 29, 2010, 09:30:25 AM »
My riding convalescence (following my off at the end of July) has been a great time to reevaluate my riding skills.  While almost everyone goes down at some point, this accident should not have happened.  >:(

I am again reading Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist (I also have the video), as well as Sport Riding Techniques by Nick Ieanatsch. I have also reviewed the MSF materials.

Any suggestions for other reading?  I can't ride yet so I doubt I will be able to make the September 12 class.  :'(

The latest R1 also sounds great out of the box.

One nice thing.  All of these bikes are better than I am.  :)

Tim,

Thanks for the report!  Great information.

Funny, my first reaction is that you are nuts to ride it on the street in slick or race mode.  Then I remember that most bikes don't have ABS or traction control. :)

Suspension set up is tough! My understanding is that the stock suspension is designed to work with a 187 pound rider. Anything outside of this and you may need new springs.

This means that ride routes are often the equivalent of skiing "black diamond" ski runs. Low speed tight turns are the point, not high speed sweepers or straightaways.

Exactly.

Fast straights and sweepers are the bike, not rider.  No need for a route for a high speed blast - and what's the point anyway?

On the other hand there is a place for sedate scenic rides to a nice lunch, etc.  It's been clear to me from the routes and posts which is which.  However perhaps this should be more explicit.

Ehrich

The BMW dealers do have demo S 1000 RRs.  I asked.

Each dealer's demo has roughly 2,500 miles on it with no mishaps other than speeding tickets.
