General Banter / Re: 2011 Planning - Phase 1
« on: October 07, 2010, 02:31:55 AM »
I'll have to keep tabs on this thread & details as they unfold.  I am definitely interested in at least one M/C trip this next season as long as the budget allows it.

With that said, I can also offer up a 3 place tilt M/C trailer that I've personally used to haul 3 f/s sportbikes down to San Antonio & back without a problem.

Look forward to seeing what details come up as time goes on!!

For Sale/Wanted to Buy / Re: Direct TV Installer Wanted
« on: August 01, 2010, 08:11:00 PM »
Thanks for the offer Chris but we don't need installation.  Everything is set up in the house...was going to try to add the Whole Home Viewing option but we would have to have an installer come out which we don't want to do.

I guess things have to be networked or something in order to use it.  They said they have to install the stuff so they can "guarantee" their work.  So really what we need is the equipment.

For Sale/Wanted to Buy / Direct TV Installer Wanted
« on: August 01, 2010, 05:31:51 PM »
Looking to see if there are any installers out there for Direct TV or if someone knows anyone well that does that sort of stuff.

Need to get some new equipment and wanted to see if anyone has a hook up or place to find things cheap.

Specifically need at least a 3 LNB dish (or just the LNB’s to work with my existing one) & a HD receiver.

Been looking on ebay & such but would like to get stuff locally if possible.  Post up, PM, or get a hold of me via cell 612-910-3339.

General Banter / Re: What brought you here?
« on: July 29, 2010, 03:51:45 PM »
Would love to go, but I'll be in Sturgis (GASP!)  :o  that weekend.

Have fun, be safe!
~D

This is yet another example of what brought me here.

In the past I've posted like RCKT GRL did in Vinces ride thread (her post is above) on other forums & all I got was guff about it.

Apparently it is viewed by some as worthless posting & they don't want to be bothered by these things.  The general attitude was "no one cares that you can't make it or why...just don't post unless you are actually going."  Well if everyone thought like that no one would bother posting anything!

Its just another example of the interesting difference between this & other forums that reminds me why I would rather post here than elsewhere.  Thanks for indulging me everyone....I just wanted to share my thoughts & people over here are much more tolerant than any other forums I'm on.

The funny thing is that a lot of the people here are on the other forums I'm talking about.  I guess that should probably yield some responses to this then.  LOL

I've been in front of the computer too long this week at work!!  Man I can't wait to ride this weekend...good thing today is my Friday!!!!!!

Felt-up. I haven't seen an anagram in a long time. Mark you have been in the service way to long.

What can I say Vince....my 3.5 years in the military plus 17+ years in public safety has had an effect on me I guess.  LOL

To follow on the heels of what others have said about the structure off rides....I'll add that I do have a way I like the rides I lead to go.  But I try to make sure people know this up front so they can make a decision on if it is for them or not.  I certainly don't expect others to conform to my way of leading/setting up rides though.

Up until the season of 2008 most of my rides were 3 to 6 bikes at the most, but since then I've led groups as big as 40 bikes.  Of course those are two extremes but what I'm pointing out is simply that every ride is different & every ride leader does things differently.

In my humble opinion that is one of the fun things about being part of a diverse forum such as MSTA...after all variety is the spice of life as they say.

I agree with what Lloyd & Greg both said about keeping stops short when there is a planned lunch stop.

I've shared the following acronym with some & I know some may make fun of me for it but here goes.

When I make a stop while riding I get "FELT-UP" which stands for:

Fuel - top off your fuel tank
Equipment - check your equipment & make changes as needed ie clean your shield, adjust bags, check your bike if you need to
Latrine - obviously this is your bathroom opportunity if you need it
Top off - meaning at the least get a quick drink of water or maybe a quick snack if that has been pre-determined to be ok
Updates - get any updates on the route or time table from the ride/group leader
Pay attention - keep an eye on the ride/group leader so you know when they are ready to hit the road again

Like I said...I'm sure some will make fun of me for this & thats fine but I also would bet some will use it as well!!

I go thru these steps whenever I stop on a ride no matter if I'm by myself or with others.

That way I make sure to hit all the things a person would need to do on a stop but time is kept to a minimum.

I think another point to clarify during the ride meeting is if gear is going to be removed during gas stops or not.

Good points so far....especially that it is the riders responsibility to know their fuel limits.  I've ran out of fuel with every bike I've owned at least once (most of the time on purpose) just so I know how far I can go when the light comes on.

My GSXR for example...I know when the light starts to flash I can go generally 30 miles until it goes solid...once its solid I better find fuel in the next 10-15 miles or I'm pushing!!

I also know depending on my riding pace that I get between 135-165 before the light starts to blink.  I’ve gotten as much as 200 miles out of just over 4 gallons on that bike which surprised me being a liter bike!!

It's a print magazine. If you're an MSTA member you should receive a copy.

A few weeks ago I paid/signed up to be a MSTA member.

Anyone know when I'll get this magazine or does someone have a copy I can look thru.

I couldn't make this ride but would like to read the review.

General Banter / Re: Route Sheets
« on: July 26, 2010, 12:05:23 AM »
I've been doing my route sheets in a very basic format but am going to start trying different formats to see what works better.  I agree with Ray, I don't think a standard format is the way to go...maybe encouraged to do but not an absolute.  That way as he said, people that volunteer to make route sheets won't be pigion holed into something that may or may not work for them.

With that said, I also like the idea of putting them up in a format that can be edited.  Just shooting from the hip here but my guess is that my favorite format is going to become Excel since it does all the math for you & such.  I have no problem leaving them able to be edited.  I think thats the best option so people that want something maybe a little different can do so.

As I get to converting my sheets I'll get them to Ray so he can post them in the "Routes" section.  I feel its good to share routes with each other...afterall, thats how I've been able to create some great rides.  Many of my routes have been pieced together from multiple routes I've gotten from others.  Thats half the fun!!

The link worked for me.  Great find Vince!!

I would love to plan a weekend trip to some of the locations they talked about before the end of the season.

Glad you found the place Dan.  I think you'll have a lot of fun on the rides....especially if you like to put miles on!!

Good point Lloyd.  I've been limiting the use of it like that to when I'm stopped or by myself with no one around.  You are absolutely right...if I'm going to say ban cell phone use then I better make an effort myself to not do it.

We're all guilty of it...but if we work on limiting it, I'm sure that would help at least a little.

178
100% ban on cell phone use while driving, and that includes "hands-free" devices. Every study I've seen concludes that even hands-free cell phone usage impairs a driver as much as alcohol impairment.

I agree 100% on this one.  If I had a penny for every time I've almost been ran off the road by someone in a cage with a cell phone glued to their head I'd be a millionaire!!  Its the conversation that distracts the drive...not holding the phone to their ear.  I encourage people to talk to their government officials to make this happen!!

I would also like to see more enforcement of endorsement, insurance, under 18 helmet law, dui and noise laws.

I would have to agree with all those as well Ray.  I think you hit on all the ones I would have.  I also agree on the fleeing bikes deal too.  With all the technology LEO's have these days, there isn't much excuse for getting involved in a high speed chase.  Afterall....you're never faster than Motorola!!

Well?  Just got word that we don't qualify for the grant.
Minnesota does NOT allow vehicle checkpoints... and it's a requirement in implementing these initiatives.
Not gonna happen.  Sorry, folks.

I would appreciate some further input from you all, however.
I can still bring up some points of discussion.

That sucks Vander.  I was curious to see where this could go!!

Hey Mike...good to see you on here!!  Look forward to meeting you tonight on the ride & picking your brain about that new VFR.

I looked at them but am a little skeptical at this time.  Enjoy looking around & like Ray said, theres a big ride this Sat if you can make it.

Should be a blast!!

My first thought was jealousy....because I would love to ride that road again!!

I don't think I was on the section in the video but have been on parts of Mulholland on my 2001 GSX-R back in Dec 2002.

Took a family trip out there & brought my bike with.  I had a blast on that road & all the roads I encountered in the Angeles National Forest.

I would love to go out there again sometime with the bike.
