General Banter / A moment of silence for...
« on: August 18, 2013, 10:36:39 PM »
Speed TV, Speedvision, Speed Channel...whatever you knew it as, RIP.
Knew it was coming...but seeing baseball highlights right now on Fox Sports Network, on the channel where Speed lived last time I clicked on it...it is a sad day :\.
Really? it's easier to sell commercial slots for sports "news" 'round the clock? Anyone who has watched Speed over the years knows of their questionable programming choices over the last few years.
Yeah, they'll still have some motorsports coverage, we'll see.
I guess I'm as guilty as any of the demise...already downloaded all Moto GP coverage from the weekend (fantastic race! At one point I planned on going to Indy for it, but a family wedding this weekend prevented that), rather than watching on TV. If only a satellite system in the US offered EuroSport channel...they'd have a new customer.
Oh well, maybe something better will come along?

General Banter / Suggested route(s) to BIR?
« on: June 13, 2013, 12:57:20 AM »
Any interesting roads/routes between the Twin Cites and BIR? Likely to be riding up there this Sunday for the SSB event. A few laps around BIR sounds like a worthwhile destination ride, but not real interested in taking the typical direct/slabbing route.
Thanks!

General Banter / Heads-Up...2 MC Permits issued this week...
« on: May 23, 2013, 12:56:50 AM »
...to my two sons, Austin (19) and Blake (18). Austin got his project CBR1000F back into running condition after a couple months of tinkering, and that was his motivation to get legal. I took it out for a few miles in one of the "dry" half hours this week, it does what it's supposed to. Not a great "learners" bike by any means, unless your in training for a rhino rodeo, but it may hit Craigslist very soon, make a couple dollars profit, or at least break even, and a more suitable "first bike" acquired.
Blake saw gas hit $4+ and thinks his plan is a good one, to ride this "great deal" he can get from one of his buddies...a '72 Yamaha AT2 125 (yep 2-stroke) street legal enduro. So far, everytime that one has left the garage, it has gotten quietly pushed back in. Good exercise program, if nothing else.
Debbie and I could see what was coming, so for their birthdays a couple weeks ago we gave them each a Basic Rider Course...hopefully they pick dates soon, before acquiring any bad habits, or lessons learned the hard way (but is there another way to learn them?!?)

For Sale/Wanted to Buy / '94 CBR1000 bits?
« on: March 23, 2013, 12:31:16 AM »
My 18 yo son dragged home a new "project" last night...'94 CBR1000. Been down a couple times, hard enough the last time to bend the front wheel pretty well (curb?) and some obvious cosmetic damage, but it is a runner. It's partially disassembled, although I am more confident in his abilities to get it back together, than I am in his abilities to "use" it once it is back together  :o.
Anyway, anyone got a bits stashed in the attic for one of these? Not sure yet what it may need, but confident there will be needs.
Thanks,

General Banter / Prokart Pit Bikes
« on: January 26, 2013, 06:42:01 PM »
Being in midst of another crappy, non-snowmobiling winter, really has my cabin fevered mind wandering. Anyone here racing Pit Bikes at Prokart?
From the Left Brain/Right Brain post, it will all make sense that I am analyzing whether I would prefer the Honda 50 based bikes or the KLX 110 based bikes. Any input? Is there enough advantage in the 110's (handling? speed? brakes? tuneability? modability? comfort? other?) to justify the seemingly higher budget?
On the Honda "clones", I am seeing SSR most often. Are they OK? Or stay away and stick with Honda OE?
210 pounds, 6'0.
Thanks!

General Banter / Got my ticket for F1 in Austin, TX
« on: July 12, 2012, 01:07:45 AM »
Anyone else here going?
How to get there? The Falco is an option, and now needs even more consideration as an option...there is an Aprilia Only FREE trackday at Texas World Speedway the Monday before the F1 weekend. Don't know what I'd do for Tue, Wed, Th? Probably laundry, every day, as there sure isn't room for much luggage!
But then I'd be commuting in/out of MN in mid-November. Maybe November will be a repeat of March? Or not?
These are all good problems to have. To be continued...

General Banter / Rain Riding Gear Recommendations?
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:37:51 PM »
My imagined scenario: Half-way out on a three hundred mile loop, it starts to rain. Priority one, get back to base camp safe and sound (does anyone here honestly ENJOY riding in the rain? Different strokes for different folks, and in my short stay here so far, some of y'all are definitely different! :)). Priority two, keep my riding gear dry, so tomorrow when the sun is shining again, boots, pants, jacket, gloves aren't water logged.
Budget considerations are a factor.
A) Rain suit recommendations/experience? One piece? Two piece? $20 disposable? $150+ breathable? Anything in-between?
B) My boots are vented, does anyone carry/use boot covers?
C) What to do about gloves?
Anything else I'm not considering, which has the potential to detract from the fun factor?
It could probably be an entire separate post, but...what is your preference for carrying gear:
a) Back Pack (I have used mine on some shorter rides, and it seems OK, but may cause add'l fatigue on looong rides?)?
b) Tank Bag (I got one with bike, haven't mounted it yet, just seems like it would be too restrictive to moving around)?
c) Tail Bag (soft/passenger seat)?
Saddle bags not an option at this point, unless someone has some Aprilia OE Falco softbags and brackets stashed in the attic they want gone for oh...say...$50...ok...$75 :).
Thanks!

Hey group,
On my AM ride today, with it being as humid as it is today (Wow, March 17th!?!), and probably a combo of the frost coming out, sections I was riding were "sweating" (dark/damp), worse in the shadows. I'm sure I'm being overly cautious, and would appreciate hearing from more experienced riders, when you are in wet corners (I'd guess it doesn't matter if its drying after rain, or sweating, like I'm seeing today?) what is your reduced %, compared to "dry" conditions, that you are A) 100% confident/comfortable or B) Increased pucker-factor, but obviously, still 99% certain you're not going to feel the bike slipping under you?
Thanks,
+P / Wade

General Banter / Ride with an iPod?
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:28:05 PM »
If you've added some background tunes in your helmet before: Did it enhance or detract from your ride? I don't think I'd want it all the time, but for the less eventful highway miles, I think I'd like it. What's your experience?

Introductions / Noob to the group from Wyoming, MN
« on: March 04, 2012, 12:33:32 AM »
Hi MN-MSTA,
I'm Wade, from Wyoming, MN (just north of Forest Lake). I followed one of Ray916MN's posts at 1000rr.net over here (Thanks Ray!). It all looks right up my alley, and hoping to get together for some Pace rides once Spring gets here. In my mid 40's, on-again off-again rider for 20 years. Last year a good friend who I used to race cars with decided to take up 2 wheel racing, so that has become the current obsession. After seeing A) How at the edge you have to ride to be competitve and B) The results of crossing the edge, I have no desire to compete...but do enjoy the exhiliration of "spirited" riding, and also like to know first hand what effect changing preload, damping, geometry etc has on the bike, so I can help my rider stay confident and competitve while he's out on the track. So I figured it was a good time to get myself back in the saddle.
In November, after a few months of researching/shopping, I got an '03 Aprilia Falco. Glad to see in the previous New Member posts that there are a few other Apes here! So far, other than trip home, I got it out on Thanksgiving Day and for a few miles back on Jan 10th, when it was 50°. :) Looking forward to the next opportunity!
Regards,
+P / Wade
