General Banter / Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
« on: December 24, 2023, 09:49:19 PM »
Hello Everyone,
We had a 52F day today. But, with rain. Yesterday when we were driving to Minneapolis area, we saw 2 cycles on the road in this warmer than normal weather.
I have always said that I had not ridden a cycle in November or December since I was in the US Army at Ft. Bliss, TX. But, several years ago we rode in November and this year we took a trip to Winona for a day in early November. Hopefully southern MN doesn't turn into a Texas winter with no snow. Hey, they did have snow the first year that I was in El Paso, and they don't know how to drive in it.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Everyone!
Carl

My last project bike was a '85 VF500F Interceptor, which we would like to sell now. It has sat in the garage with a cover, battery tender and heated garage in the winter. I have ridden it about 2-3 times per summer the past few years to keep in limbered up.
Anyone interested in buying, let me know.
See photos.

At least nobody can say it is too cold to ride. That is if you are in Minnesota.

General Banter / Re: Spare tire
« on: June 04, 2023, 09:53:18 PM »
Yep, that is the way it is on many vehicles. On some, it gives more room without a spare in the trunk. Also, many have different size tires and mostly, nobody checks the pressure in the spare. Then when they need it, it is also flat. I have seen many times with the small spare tire on the car, it is smoking as they drive, because it is low on pressure. OR, is it because they think they can drive just as fast with it, and forever.

Our 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1, came with a small air pump. It also has a free tire service while under warranty where a Ford dealer will come to your rescue.

I just had new 2 Metzeler tires installed on the 1986 Gold Wing Interstate at Leo's South, Lakeville. Maybe I should check to see if they have free road service.

Last Saturday when we had over 6 in of snow, I sent a photo of our deck and back yard to some friends in San Antonio, TX, saying that it was a bad April Fools joke.
They sent back that they were putting up with the 86 degree weather.
Well, now it looks like the weekend will be 60-70's here in MN and hopefully melt the rest of the snow.

LET'S RIDE!!

General Banter / Helmet Styles and What is the Right Choice
« on: March 21, 2023, 09:37:50 PM »
Recently a long time MSTA Member sent a link to us about helmets. It is very interesting in how they talk about all styles of helmets and which is the right choice for you. This link gives examples of the four main styles of helmets, and the differences in construction and safety. They also talk about the different types of testing of helmets, as well as the ratings.

https://americansporttouring.com/the-truth-about-modular-helmets/

If you know someone that does not read the MSTA forum or they are not a MSTA Member and they ride motorcycles, forward this link to them. This will help them decide what type of helmet is best for them when they go to buy a new helmet. If they are racers, they will have a Snell rating that they will need to adhere to for their helmet.

I wrote an article last year for the Dan Clark Safety Program, about the different helmet laws in Central America. It was very interesting to note, that in Costa Rica, a country that is probably not as tough on some laws, but still they require a full face helmet. Keep in mind, that most cycles in Central America are of small single cylinder type. We did not see any sport touring or large cruisers, but maybe a few 2 cyl. bikes, but they were the small type. Nothing that would be capable of high speeds.

Here is a Ride to plan for. August 20-21, 2022, the MS River Road Run for Multiple Sclerosis. It starts at Leo's South in Lakeville and taking scenic roads, no Interstates and ends in Tomah, WI for the night. On Sunday a more direct route back to the Hastings area. This is NOT a follow the leader ride. We leave the Start together, but then riders can stop at the first suggested gas stop or sooner and meet up with their riding friends. Or, ride by yourself. Everyone is given a route book with turn-by-turn directions as well as the route is marked with orange MS RRR signs.

And as soon as those riders north and west of the twin cities melt their snow away also.  Hopefully it gets followed by some rain to help clean the roads.

Early yesterday it looked like Spring, warm 48F weather and rain.  But it changed in a hurry.  Today looks sunny, but step outside and you will realize the sun is not warming up the temp very much.

General Banter / Riding During Coronavirus

I received this message from Twisted Road.  I have seen some states that allow riding and some that don't.  Here is something that may help you decide.  Check out twistedroad.com

At the Start of the MS River Road Run, each rider is given a route booklet, with turn-by-turn directions.  As well as the route is marked with bright orange signs and arrows for each turn.

We do leave as a group in the morning, but once on the road, you can ride at your own pace, by yourself or with a group.  The first planned gas stop is about 10 miles from the Start at Leo's.  That is where riders either continue on their own, or meet up with a friend and form their own group, if they so desire.

There is also a truck and trailer that follows the last rider, in case someone needs assistance and a haul of the bike.

The MS River Road Run, is a ride to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. This year’s date is Aug. 17-18, 2019, starting in Lakeville, MN at Leo's and riding to Hastings, not taking a direct route, and then following the river for a short time and back to Welch Village and more back roads to Wabasha for a noon lunch.  After lunch, head into Wisconsin to Independence and Dodge and many more of the alphabet roads and a few named roads, such as Alligator Slide and then cross back to Minnesota before ending on Saturday at Winona, after riding about 240 miles, with a banquet.  Sunday we head back to Hastings and then to home wherever that might be for the rider.

You can sign-up on line or at Leo’s on Saturday morning.  It is preferred that you sign up on line, to help plan for food.

This is a "One of a Kind- Ride at your Own Pace"
Charity Event to Benefit the MS Society
