General Banter / Fuel Requirements and Recommendations
« on: August 10, 2012, 09:37:25 AM »
I'm starting a new topic instead of continuing to trash Hope's cave-riding thread.  I'm posting a page from the 848 Streetfighter manual regarding fuel recommendations.  Worth noting is the requirement for 95 RON, or for those silly American bastages who refuse to adopt the standards of the rest of the world, 90 (RON+MON)/2.

Also of interest is the warning that using fuel with ethanol content over 10% is forbidden and will void the warranty.

I could start a whole 'nother thread on ethanol. :P

General Banter / Metal Valve Stems
« on: June 04, 2012, 02:41:43 PM »
Anyone using metal valve stems on their bike?  I'm considering an angled valve stem like this one

or

Any reason to use a straight one vs. an angled one?  I've heard criticism of the 90-degree angled ones, but not of 25-or-so-degree ones like the one in the picture.

Thanks!

General Banter / ERC in Fairmont Saturday, May 5
« on: April 20, 2012, 02:24:07 PM »
We're running an ERC in Fairmont on Saturday, May 5, 9 a.m to about 2 p.m., with lunch included.  We have six riders and could take two more.  I haven't advertised this anywhere else, and I may not.  I realize it's a bit of a trip from the Cities, but we'll do our best to make it worth your time!.

PM me if interested.

Being careful and being safe aren't always the same thing.  Sure, there's some overlap, and you can't really be safe without exercising some degree of care, but just being careful isn't always enough.  Sometimes it might even be unsafe.

Let me give an example.  I might be squeezing my brake lever as gently as possible, turning my throttle as smoothly as I can, and making very gradual lane changes.  I may never break the speed limit, even when the traffic around me is going five or ten mph faster than me.  If I do that every time I ride, it becomes habit.  I tell myself that I'm being careful, and that it makes me safer.

But what happens when that car pulls out of a driveway, or that deer jumps out of the ditch?  Am I going to ready to really use those brakes or really give that handlebar a good push?  What happens when I need to speed up to get myself out of trouble?  Am I ready for that?

Sure, it's a great idea to practice life-saving skills on a dry, sunny day in a parking lot.  But there are opportunities to practice every time you get on the bike.

Do you agree?  Or is this a thinly-veiled attempt to justify "spirited" riding?

General Banter / Should MNMSTA be a members eyes only forum?
« on: October 30, 2010, 08:05:57 AM »
It seems futile to ask a question and poll for answers when the thread is locked and poll results are hidden.

For what it's worth, I don't really care if the forum is restricted to members only.  The only good reason, in my opinion, for any restrictions, is to keep spammers out.

Introductions / I'm Brent
« on: March 16, 2010, 10:25:58 PM »
Some of you might know me.  My favorite bike is my R6, but I put a few miles on my 250 Ninja, and I ride other bikes (when I can keep them running). My very first motorcycle was a Gemini SST 80, a weird Taiwanese 2-stroke with an engine design stolen from Yamaha.  The most miles I ever put on one bike was 135,000 on my K75S, before it was attacked by a deer.

I haven't made many group rides the last few years.  Most weekends, Debby and I are teaching people to ride motorcycles at our school.  I also work with Jessica at zaluskyridingschool.com.  Neither school has anything scheduled for the weekend of May 2 yet, though, so maybe we'll do the Slimey Crud Run this spring.

This site is an excellent place to find people to ride with.  Ray organizes some fun rides with great routes, great bikes, and great people!
