General Banter / Re: Keyless gas caps
« on: March 24, 2011, 01:44:23 PM »
I started seeing them around this tiime.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_energy_crisis   People were stealing gas.

Caps are keyed to prevent theft and tampering. It would suck to find out someone decided to dump sugar in your tank.

The keyless caps that are out there are intended for track bike use. If you're bike has no ignition lock, it doesn't make sense to still have a key for a gas cap. Locks not only add unnecessary weight, they add complexity. I remember being at a track day where a guy ruined his day because he  forgot the key to his gas cap. Dohhh....

Both of these are valid points.

I remember the gas crisis of the late 70's as well. I worked at Normandale Mobil (84th & Normandale Blvd.) pumping gas during that time period. One Saturday the owner had me take a "last car" sign and tape it to the trunk of the last car in the long line of cars as we had to ration our sales until our next delivery arrived. As I was taping the sign to the last car, a car pulled up behind him and the driver offered me $5 to put the sign on the back of his car, ha.

As I *never* leave my bike out in the open overnight, I feel the threat of gas theft isn't too high a risk as they'd only get 3-4 gallons anyway. Having someone maliciously put something in the tank is a probability though. :(

Anyway, like I said, I'll probably not make the purchase as the convenience of it isn't worth $100 to me. If it was $50, maybe ...

These do look cool though :)

General Banter / Keyless gas caps

Perhaps I'm looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, but ... has anyone tried one of these after-market key less gas caps? Years ago I was not thinking and put my tank bag on my tank with the key left in the gas cap slot. The key bent significantly, but I was able to remove it without breaking the key. (This is now why I always have a 2nd key with me, ha).

Seams like a neat idea, though I don't know that I've ever seen anyone use these. Anyone?

... and I'm not sure it's a "problem" worth a $100 fix, lol.

Please, anything would be great. Posts here or pm's are good either way.
Thanks much for the time,
Joel

Joel,
I’d like to offer these thoughts (as you are asking for opinions).
Let me first say, I hate talking about myself. I rarely do (as my Facebook friends can attest) yet I do love riding in group settings.

As a rider who has the rather dubious honor of riding with a LOT of people over the last 10 years (I’d go so far as to say I’m probably one of a dozen or so riders that’s ridden in the most “open forum” rides in the last 10 years), I’ve seen a lot of accidents.

As I’ve alluded to in other posts, so much of motorcycle riding is counter-intuitive and needs to be learned with repetition and practice. As I’ve also mentioned in other threads (Footnote #1) , cornering on the street is a completely different animal than it is on the track.
I know that track instruction does not teach a rider to follow a single tire track but to apex a corner.  If you were to ride a 300 miles day in Wisconsin & Minnesota twisties while cornering the way they teach on the track, you will increase your level of risk and increase your chances of crashing. I’ve seen it happen a lot. Track instruction assumes the riding is done in the more controlled environment of the track. The street has gravel, animals, cars, people and many other dangers.

I know that almost all riders (at least the ones I’ve spoken with) feel it’s a net gain to their motorcycling knowledge base to experience a track day, so I encourage you to try it if it’s something that interests you. But having said that, it’s also vital that said riders also have the knowledge and self control to keep track specific skills ON THE TRACK, as they can  lead to disastrous consequences on the street.

And I could be completely wrong about everything I've said above. Your mileage may vary.  :)

Respectfully,
Greg

Been out xcountrying 5 times so far and have Aprilia's chassis completely serviced. Anyone else taking care of their bikes & bodies? ::)Guzzi John

IMO, physical fitness is paramount in becoming a better motorcyclist. Like the Minnesota ad campaign says, "Do!"   :)

A little follow-up story on this day of the trip. We rode State Hwy E north from HWY 60 near Winona, Mo to HWY 106. We then jogged over to HWY 19 and had a wonderful time, thanks for that tip! While we were headed north on State Hwy E (about the width of a nicer “lettered” road in Wisconsin, comparable to CTY P for example) we came upon a large gravel dump truck moving along at a decent clip, (50-55mph?). I happened to be in the front and passed him first. I thought he seemed to edge a little into my space as I passed him, but dismissed it as just chance.

As Tony and Jared passed him he edged farther and farther into their space as each one passed, clearly trying to spook (or worse?) them as I guess he didn’t like us passing. I’m not prone to violence and haven’t been in a fight since the age of 12, but that angered me to no end.
Given that we were in meth country (Southern Missouri is one of the worst in the country) and I had no idea if he was armed, I’m glad sensible thoughts overrode the anger I was feeling. For a moment I really wanted to …….   >:D

Anyway, be careful on State Hwy E
