Adventure biking covers a lot of ground - everything from gravel roads to forest trails and single track. If you're thinking about single track type stuff you want something like a DRZ or perhaps a Yamaha WR250X; anything bigger takes the fun out of it fast. If just want to be able to explore gravel roads or an occasional forest trail consider something like the Honda above or a Versys with dual sport tires. For the price of a GS/Tiger etc you can have any of the bikes I've mentioned, plus your VFR and change left over for gear and gas.
Headed to Breitbachs in Balltown, but the ferry was closed so we went to Plan B, which had us eating in McGregor and rolling north on 76. Waved at the ice cream eaters in Rushford. Stopped at the Amish house ourselves.
Highlight was watching Tony wick it up on the sweepers heading out of Hammond! I'm thinking that he's done that a time or two before.

TWISP, Wash.—The Washington State Patrol says a couple from St. Paul, Minn., were killed Sunday when their motorcycle collided with a car on Highway 20 east of Twisp.
The patrol identifies them as the 64-year-old driver, Ronald A. McKinley, and his 49-year-old passenger, Ann K. Johnson.
The Wenatchee World reports (http://bit.ly/19fVkwh) they were hit by an oncoming vehicle that crossed the centerline. The driver was a 25-year-old Omak woman who was injured and treated at a hospital.
The crash caused a grass fire that burned about a quarter-acre before firefighters put it out.
This one did not involve a motorcycle. However it's potentially an important lesson as it appears the semi trailer went over the centerline of Hwy 76 near Houston at mile marker 16. My mapping program shows MM16 is in that really twisty section. It's not hard to imagine the trucker did not use the shoulders to keep the trailer within his lane. A reminder to always be vigilant for this situation on a motorcycle.
I was down at the Hiawatha Rally when that happened. Some folks had trouble getting to the rally because the police had Hwy 76 completely shut down.
You hit on the key issue - you need a cap that will stand up to fuel. I've used MSR bottles and they work well. I recently added a Rotopax to a dual sport bike for an extra gallon mounted securely. I know folks who have used the bladders from the Starbucks/Caribou coffee boxes.
County Road AA, the Rustic Road with the water crossings still has a steep patch of 20 yards or so that is hard packed snow and ice. Which made it...interesting.
The neighbors would probably complain if you did the full-Arkansas by peeling off the rest of the plastic and bolting a 2x4 across the bumper struts. Besides, that just doesn't look right without a washing machine on the front porch as a back drop.
More marital-unit mayhem - the car wash episode resulted in the door coming down on the back of the Jeep. The place she took the Jeep to have the rear door repaired and painted didn't quite get it right. Paint is either a shade darker, or they didn't mix in the metal flake or something, but it is off.
I always smile when I come to those "Crooked and Steep" signs in Arkansas. Lots of fun stuff down there. The only place I've ever had vertigo on a motorcycle - between the closed tree canopy and banked turns I had to stop and find the horizon again.
