Title: I hate tube wheels - do you?
Post by: SilkMoneyLove on November 04, 2014, 07:17:18 PM
I hate tube wheels. I seem to manage to pinch the tube with the last bite of the tire spoon often. It doesn't happen all of the time, but it happens enough, and when it does I get pissed off.
Tubeless tires are a breeze. I should just get a set of Supermoto wheels for my KTM and be done with tubes.
Anyone else have the same issue?

Baby power and this:  BEAD BUDDY (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035UDHZ2/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1/183-1817989-5560618?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_r=0E5RTCJYE8SVGW9Z49MW&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1944579842&pf_rd_i=B004MBZTPO)

Also? Not all supermoto wheels are tubeless.  Alpina wheels are spoked and tubeless... but are $$$.

And? If you go supermoto, you need an oversized front rotor and relocation bracket for the caliper at the absolute minimum.   It seems that most convert to full brake swap outs with alternate lever/master cylinder/brake line... etc for ease in transitioning from dirt to supermoto.  Also... $$$.

Stuff to think about.  Good luck.

KTM LC4e - I can direct swap a KTM Sm wheel set on.

But- that is expensive and all I really want is more street oriented tires on my ride. I just have to get better at these tubes. I have also viewed many videos and a tip I will try next is to finish the tire at 90 degrees to the valve stem. I have been doing 180 degrees. I'll also try baby powder. Haven't been using that, but until I get the technique, I'll try any tricks I can to make it work.

What I have always done was to fill the tube with air to get it straight inside the tire. Then let it all out so that you can get the tire on. The valve stem being at 90 or 180 degrees when you try to get the last of the tire on never mattered to me. Just make sure you push the stem and the security bolt up so that you don't get them under the bead. When you are using your spoons be sure to take smaller bits.

New tube went on fine.  Smaller bites and doing the "valve at 90 degrees" thing are the differences from my earlier attempt as well as the new dunlop tube seemed to be pre-powdered.

I was pretty nervous to do that last bit of levering though.

I used to dislike tubes a lot more than I do now. Since I started using these babes, I haven't pinched a tube: http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-tools/stubby-tire-tools/. (http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-tools/stubby-tire-tools/.) I have had something like these for my bicycle tubes for years, but it took a while before someone made them for motorcycles.
