Bike Help / Repacking Mufflers?
« on: January 16, 2017, 08:31:47 PM »
This is prompted by wanting to learn, not by any issue.

When do motorcycle mufflers need to be repacked?  How do you know it is time?

Thanks!

General Banter / Out Yet This Season?
« on: March 31, 2015, 08:28:32 PM »
I rode for about two hours today, including on O and surrounding roads.  Very pretty late afternoon to be out.

The roads are in nice shape and there is less sand than I expected.  It is Wisconsin, so there is always sand, but it is quite nice for spring and before there have been heavy rain.

In many areas road crews have been out cutting branches and trees, opening up sight lines.  There has been a good amount of shoulder repair on O (grading).

They only bad roads are those which were already questionable.  They did not far well and got worse.  Bother.

Browsing through the routes sub-forum, I noted most of the links are broken.   :(

General Banter / Winter Reading
« on: February 12, 2014, 06:39:19 PM »
Winter is the perfect time to reassess riding techniques and to mentally prepare for a safe and intelligent riding season.

I have Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist I & II since they were first published, and am currently rereading Sport Riding Techniques by Nick Ienatsch.  I find the Ienatsch superior.

While one cannot learn to ride well by reading a book, you can learn a great deal as to how to approach riding as well as about motorcycle dynamics.

Does anyone have suggestions for other books?  I am finding it helpful to mentally review before getting on a bike again.

Thanks

Ehrich

General Banter / Hi, everyone
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:58:50 PM »
Hello, Gang

It's great to see the posted rides and the active discussions.  I hope everyone is enjoying the amazing weather and taking advantage of it to ride.

I'm much improved.  The ribs are healed, the road rash is nearly healed, and the bruises are gone.  My right shoulder, arm and hand are still swollen and healing.  I am dutifully going to PT.  Unfortunately there is a good amount of nerve damage.  Much of it is improving.  The biggest issue remaining is the inability to lift my right arm and loss of fine motor control of my right hand.  I am still improving however.

My gear did an incredible job.  I am especially glad knowing that this group rides well dressed.  It really matters.

Great riding safety discussion in a couple of threads.  We all ride knowing we can get hurt.   A crash is no reason to stop enjoying riding.  Learn from your own and others' mistakes and go forward.

My crash was my own doing.  It's frustrating as there was no reason for it to happen - a loss of attention, object fixation, grabbed the front brake too hard - I don't know.  I don't remember what happened but it was my screw up.

A crash is never the fault of the organizer or the guy leading unless he deliberately punts you off the road.  I know if it was my ride I would feel awful but it is not the organizer's fault.

Thank you again to those of you that visited.  It was great! I really appreciated the magazines and bike mementos. These visits are some of the few things I remember about being in the hospital.  (I'm really sorry if I said anything obnoxious or mean while you were there.  I later learned that because of all the narcotics and low oxygen saturation I said some appalling things.  While I have been told this is common with this level of narcotics and injury, I am embarrassed.)

Extra special thanks to Greg.  You were incredible.

Now get out there everybody!

General Banter / Where to get Zipper fixed

One of the zippers on my leathers failed.  It should be a straightforward fix.

Where do I take it?

Thanks!

General Banter / 12V Power Take-Off/Cigarette Socket
« on: April 01, 2011, 01:49:30 PM »
I am looking for a cigarette lighter socket to install on my bike to power a GPS and cellphone (not simultaneously).

I can find plenty of socket extensions etc. that I can cut apart and add a fuse holder, but does anyone have a suggestion for a simple fused socket with wither bare wire ends or lugs to connect to the battery?

General Banter / Body Position?
« on: October 09, 2010, 05:14:16 PM »
I have been surprised to observe on recent rides that most of us lean counter to the direction of the corner in a crossed-up body position.

That is, instead of leaning in the direction of the turn most lean to the outside.  This increases the lean of the bike and looks awkward.  It does decrease any chicken strip width however.  :)

I'm not in a position to be critical, most of you are faster than me.  But leaning to the outside is counter to what I have been told/read is proper body position.

This leads me to wonder if there is a benefit to leaning to the outside that I am not aware of.  I am also curious if those of you that ride corners crossed up know you are doing so.

I also wonder if I have a tendency to do this also even though I am actively thinking to put weight on the inner peg and to lean into the corner. (Feel free to comment on what I do if you have helpful suggestions.)

Thoughts?

General Banter / Get out and Ride! It's wonderful!
« on: October 06, 2010, 05:21:31 PM »
If you can justify taking a day off, do so.

I rode the alphabets today.  The roads are in good shape, the weather was glorious and the views spectacular.  Color!  Vistas!

It really is a special time to ride.

(Last year this week it rained almost all week with highs in the low fifties, and next week it snowed twice).

General Banter / Suggestions for riding books/videos?
« on: August 29, 2010, 09:30:25 AM »
My riding convalescence (following my off at the end of July) has been a great time to reevaluate my riding skills.  While almost everyone goes down at some point, this accident should not have happened.  >:(

I am again reading Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist (I also have the video), as well as Sport Riding Techniques by Nick Ieanatsch. I have also reviewed the MSF materials.

Any suggestions for other reading?  I can't ride yet so I doubt I will be able to make the September 12 class.  :'(

General Banter / I need a new bike! Which One?
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:14:49 AM »
As many of you know, I crashed on the ride Sunday.  As it turns out, both of us are in worse shape than I initially thought.

I have a comminuted distal radial fracture with some displacement (left wrist - will be set in about a week when the swelling diminishes).  I also broke my right thumb with the break going into the end joint.  I'm glad I was wearing good leathers, racing boots and gloves, etc.  The injuries would have been much more serious otherwise.

Much worse, my Ducati is almost positively totaled.   Gorgeous machine, perfectly sorted out, tuned by Doug Lofgren, etc,

So what should I get as a replacement?  I'm thinking a BMW S1000RR.  What else should I consider?

This is a good group to ask as there is a lot of experience here and lots of great bikes.

Final note: Lloyd's route was great!  Exactly what I want for one of these rides.  I'm going to ride it again - and finish it! - once I am healed.

Also, the crash was no one's fault but my own.  I'm entitled to crash after 30 years or so of riding. :P  My plan is to go much longer before the next one however.  This one hurts like hell.

All replacement suggestions eagerly considered.

Ehrich
