Bike Help / Re: Checking float height - Bandit 1200
« on: August 09, 2011, 04:01:43 PM »
I used last year an after market rebuild kit from Dennis Kirk for my Goldwing. It only took 30 days for the alcohol to rune the float needle and the seat. For this get OEM.

You can also buy the oem parts through SUDCO in california they are the usa importer for all mikuni and kiehin parts---all parts they sell and supply are genuine mikuni and kiehin !!! which your carbs are one or the other

But the k&L and other "aftermarket" kits just don't work good enough.....vinces example I have not experienced but I have seen many leak with all brand new aftermatket orings etc and the rubber quality and fit is sub par !!

Do you have the service manual? (tons of free online sites have many bikes in PDF formatt)

It shows how to measure and what the height is suggested to be at (you can vary it by about 1-2mm either way to change jetting parameters....

Service manual should always be the first purchase on any vehicle you plan on doing your own service work on...IMO

Well not to make light of the situation, but this has been shot all to hell.

I have on the last several outings, taken the time to follow pretty much everyone and video them...I have been making these videos into DVD's for each person to do their own self critique. ( This is a pain in the ass- dumping the entire video to a flash drive would be much easier)

I find if you actually view these and honestly critique your own riding, you could be your own best weapon in improving your riding.

Of course you do have to know what you are looking at and what to do to actually correct any areas you can improve upon.

There are several riders who have had numerous questions for many members of the forum in their efforts to improve their riding. This is a good thing and I applaud them for continueing in their riding skills advancement, but too much is too much at some point one can only stand to talk about that side of motorcycling for so long.

I know many members are more than willing to help others out, but remember most of us are really out riding for the enjoyment of riding not to try to "teach". Even though pretty much everyone is willing to answer questions and dispense advice- out of respect for everyone on the rides this time should be kept to aminimum and not made to be the sole purpose or topic on the rides (unless it is posted as such a ride)

Which speaking of.........I will be doing another one of my introductory rides like last year, with the main difference being-you will get about 20-30 minutes of video footage of yourself...you supply me with a flashdrive of atleast 4GB (you will get it back for yourself) Watch for a post on this in the next week or so

So are you going to bring it out tomorrow to play and show it off??

It would be good to have you along.

I think you should call Vince. With all the trackdays he is doing and then trying to do all these weekend rides-he has to be tired of changing tires and everything all the time. A bike that is essentially just the same as his would be the perfect solution.....He could join the ranks of all those who suddenly have "trackbikes"

 How much is the fine?

I would probably talk to an attorney who knows tennessee law-or practices there to confirm or deny if this is actually a "moving offense" if it is not I'd just pay it and be done-If so I would find out if in fact it is even legal to ticket via a "speed camera" since there is no way to prove who the operator is (with gear on) how can they ticket the owner-isn't that why the law went bye bye in MN and other states?

1:50-1:54 isn't bad.

Control riders? Instructors? ( did they stay out of the way?- I suppose it was the ROCC instructors and they likely wouldn't slow any of you down)

You should have had somewhat of an advantage on some of them, knowing the "old track" and all.

It is probably a good thing you didn't "win". We surely would have never heard the end of it....lol

You guys were so excited from the racing you couldn't remember to bring everything home with you....or just so exhuasted from the heat and humidity, all you could think of was getting in the a/c van and going home to bed.....or your heads were so big from your 1,2 finish your brain didn't know what to do with all the extra room?

Where are the pictures of your umbrella girl ??? That is the most important stat.....

How many in the race?
How many laps?
What kind of lap times?

Low to mid 1:40's ( consistent sub 1:45's)should get you in the top 5 in most of the races (600cc and bigger) 2:00 on a 250 will get you in victory circle  (or atleast that is what I think the current winners of the 250 class are running- the 07 and older version is faster, so maybe they aren't running this fast on the "spec" 08 and newer models)

I didn't realize this wasn't an actual race. This is a bunch of trackday people going out and flogging around on their bike with ZARS. 2:00 lap times may well win the race Vince is in.

Good luck none the less-and Vince I hope you do "school the fools"

I will add this disclaimer-I haven't been to BIR in over 10 years, so this information is based on what some of my "racing" customers have relayed and what I have seen on "my laps" for lap times of winners

I was heading up that way around 5am tomorrow for the msta photo tag-but I think I will wait until Sunday. An old man all washed up past his prime ( that is what they tell me anyways) on the racetrack in a race has to be worth a few yuks.....lol

What bike and what class are you racing in? Did you secumb to the infestation of "I have to have a trackbike"

Good luck, your going to need it ( make sure to turn right after that long straight)

General Banter / Re: Rider Literally Burning It Up - Ouch!!!

The fault is clearly the car-however, a "good" rider could have avoided this.

The cyclist (had they been paying attention and known the warning signs to look for) could have easily of avoided this outcome. Brake and turn-slow and turn-just slow early enough....lost of missed opportunities to avoid this outcome

Obviously I wasn't there, and the video doesn't show enough to see the "whole picture" ( perhaps something up road was blocking his view??)but;
it is very clear to me that the car (illegal or not) took long enough to make that "U" turn that an observant rider would have been able to see what was coming.
it is likelwise crystal clear that the rider laid his bike down-stupid, stupid, stupid ---this is nearly never the best choice and never the fastest way to stop plus it takes away any option of turning.

Now given that he likley wasn't paying attention or looking for the right things, he more than likley had only an instant before his reflex was to "lay it down"---I sure hope in the same circumstances my reflex action will be to brake and turn--of course I hope I am actually as observant as I should be and wouldn't let it get to that..

and has the reporter never heard of magnesium??

The Apple Valley Sams club has this same "gimmick" going on there sometimes too. Cars, boats, 4 wheelers, motorcycles etc....

it is more just another way to "advertise" and get more people to see your products, IMO (just like when they park them in the shopping malls near xmas time)

And not to pick a brand war-but I'd pick a Kawasaki over any other bike but Honda (and even a few of them I'd steer clear of). So yes I'd call Kawasaki a "premium brand"

Off Topic / Re: Discipline yields freedom
« on: June 23, 2011, 12:48:37 AM »
I’m going to try and steer this away from the political end of the conversation ….

In motorcycling, for me, discipline yields freedom. Every time I get on my bike there are 15 minutes of “prep” time (30 minutes if I wash it). I get my gear together. Grab my leather and wipe off the bugs, clean the helmet visor, grab the Ipod, get my “mini” wallet, keys …. Yada, yada. All of these steps are therapeutic “disciplines” for me. I’m thinking about, “riding the bike” while doing this prep work. These disciplines, for me, yield the feeling of freedom in knowing I’m prepared to ride the bike.

Greg,
You could cut that 15/30 minutes of prep work/time in half if you would do the cleaning when you get home from the ride!!  ;)

Oh, my bad.....  you are looking to have some pre-ride time thinking about the bike/riding. :)

-John

You could save even more time by letting the rain clean your bike...lol

I think depending on what discipline you are talking about and what freedoms-one could argue by being self disciplined you are restricting your own freedoms instead of having the unruly hand of another take those freedoms from you.......but it is so subject to interpretation and even to what your own description of what is freedom and what is discipline--an argument or  discussion I have no intention of joining in on. I just wanted to poke fun of Greg at how clean and pretty his new bike has been this year  :o
