General Banter / Re: No rides today???

I did end up riding solo today and did Roger/Dennis River ride. I rode mostly in drizzle and rain and as I was headed east, the rain, was following me.  There is a certain beauty in riding in the rain. It can reveal shortcomings you might not know with your riding style, gear and motorcycle.  My Gore-Tex Alpinestar boots that once were waterproof are not anymore. (They told me after they replaced the soles it won’t be)  I lost the spark on my front cylinder just before Vasa since it’s been several years since I applied dielectric grease on it. Hopefully on my new bike this won’t be an issue.
The entire ride I haven’t seen any my kind of motorcycles, just in the end ran into an Aerostich with a big twin old SuperHawk.
I wish I had an MSTA card to hand him. Seems like the kind of guy who would fit right in the MSTA.
See you at Twistar.

Such a beautiful day and no rides? Come-on, your mothers will understand.
I am out solo I guess. You meet the nicest people riding solo on a Suzuki or a Triumph.  :)

Happy mothers day.

Welcome back Daddy. I wasn't aware you were gone.

Ray, we should all do an easy gravel road ride starting from your house.  Other options are to go on one of TC dual sport riders yahoo group rides. They are usually very easy.

There is Wabeno d/s ride that can be as easy or as difficult as you like.I enjoyed the ADV rally in Eagle river WI last year. There were at least 5 people from this forum  on it. I will try to make it again this year.

If you really get into it there are those single tracks places, but I still  haven't figured them out.  :)

Thanks Dale and Vince. Very informative. I have heard about non oxygenated gas, but never looked for it specifically.   I did not think starting the bikes is a good idea, but I was concern leaving gas even with Stbil in the carb for several months isn’t a good thing either.
The bike is only worth something when I sell it. Something one of our mutual friends told me it’s going to be very hard to pull.

That method would probably work if I ride it at least once a year.

When I did that with my 250 dirt bike, the carburetor gummed up and only cleaning the carb fixed the problem.  To this method defense, it was over a year in between rides.

Since this happened 2-3 years ago, it made me concern about my d/s and street bike. (Those I ride more than once a year)  I start them up in the garage about once a month during winter time for about 20 minutes. I am not sure it’s good for the bikes or me inside the house.  :)
I do drain the gas from the carb on the dirt bike now which seem to help.

Although I don’t have plans riding either hard core dirt or track for more than 1-2 a year, selling either one for $1000 doesn’t seem right to me. (Especially the SV)

I am thinking about getting a new street bike this year and I don’t think I will able to sell the SV with over 50K miles. (I don’t want to give it away either) It is going to be crowded with a 4th bike in the garage. (I have a dirt bike that’s sitting a lot too)  Although I haven’t been to the race track since 08, every year I plan on going at least once or twice.  My thought is to keep the SV for that purpose only and just let it sit most of the time.

What do you think and what maintenance should I do to it while not being used most of the year?

Congratulation Ray. MCN thinks it's the perfect bike. 10 years ago I bought my first new bike, maybe this year I will get my second ever new bike. This warm weather (and the motorcycle show) is making me dream.

I plan on getting the red bike out from it's semi retirement tomorrow :).Though, if I remember correctly, not sure if I have enough rear tire for a full day.

Nice bike Ray, though not the most comfortable on long d/s rides. Is it the electric start version?

George, back in April of 03 I did a week of riding 2 up with my ex wife in AZ on a BMW1150RT.
The plan was to go north of Phoenix to the Grand Canyon and across to Bryce and Zion park in UT.
Unfortunately we hit a snow storm in Flagstaff and anything north of there was covered with snow.
(It wouldn’t have stopped if I was on a d/s solo  :))
Our backup plan was to ride in the Tombstone Bisbee and Tucson area. The highlights, Coronado Trail Scenic Byway  on the south east side of the state and the climb to Kitts Peak National Observatory.
This was all on a big touring bike. I am sure there are a lot of d/s riding as well.

The only time I will be doing something remotely to what you are describing is in the parking lot or when not on pavement. (counter balancing)
Otherwise, on pavement at speeds faster than a crawl, lean into  the direction of the turn.

One of my main motivations in picking up a KLR was to take it back up to da U.P. and check out more roads like this

General Banter / Re: Trailer help

Guys,
Keep in mind that I have a class 1 hitch with only 200 lb TW.  It is only 1.25².
I read that the 1.25 to 2” convertor is used for bicycle mounts and such, but not for towing a trailer with to sport/sport touring motorcycles. It will also increase the length of the hitch which potentially increase TW. (tongue weight. ) I found a mount with a 5” rise, but that only brings me up to 18. 5 inches from the ground. I would be OK with 20” although not quite leveled.
My main concern is not so much ride quality, it’s actually hitting the bottom of the trailer.

Ian, do you have a sedan or an SUV?

General Banter / Trailer help
« on: July 27, 2010, 02:06:03 PM »
Recently bought  a Kendon trailers that calls for 21 “ from the ground to the top of the ball in order to make the trailer level.
I have a class 1 hitch on my sedan with 1.25” x1.25 “ receiver. My current setup takes me to 16” above ground level. The only thing I could find was a ball mount that would get me to  a little below 19”.

Any suggestions? (serious ones, not buy an SUV)
Doing some on-line research revealed this is an issue with Kendon trailer owners + sedan.  Most have gone to a welder or a machine shop to custom make them one.
Any recommendations for this solution?

Thanks,
Allon

General Banter / Re: Route Sheets

The best way is a route sheet + a GPS route. Makes life easier and safer.
I found out that sometimes you can't always rely entirely on the GPS.
