Bummer.  I swear the deer are becoming the most common denominator of the accidents I hear about the last year or so.

I'll try to remove another one of these varmints off the potential threats list in the coming months. I hate the bastards until the bacon-wrapped back strap is on the grill.

Don't stop at one! Take out as many as you can.

granted I've only been on bikes a few years but have seen more deer this year than all other years combined

General Banter / Re: Why I ride Adventure-Tour Bike
« on: September 05, 2012, 06:28:19 PM »
This reminds me of the "roads" (there's a loose term) that Vince has lead me on this summer, lol. I've ridden down so much gravel, rocky, hole filled crummy roads on my bike that I wouldn't even want to take my car on. After stopping and yelling at Vince that "this roads sucks" I followed him anyways. Now, if I ever need to bury evidence I'm confident I can get back there on my bike and keep a low profile and I don't need some gimicky adventure bike to do it with. I happen to love my 250 but certainly not going to go around and act like it's the greatest bike out there. Glad to hear you're enjoying yours too. There's as many different types of bikes as there are bikers and one is not "better" than the rest, just different.

I have a horrible optical affliction though: I do not see speed limit signs.

So I'm not the only one! Does this mean there's a cure?  ;D  Welcome Erik!

Also of interest is the warning that using fuel with ethanol content over 10% is forbidden and will void the warranty.
Would there be any way to prove that someone was using fuel containing more then 10% ethanol? My owner's manual also states not to use more than 10% ethanol, 15% MTBE or 5% methanol and like his ^^^ states any fuel system or performance problems resulting from higher percentages are not covered by the warranty.

I've been hearing a lot about fuel and ethanol lately and a lot of people seem confused about what's ok and no ok. It's reached a point we have to plan which gas stations to go to now on group rides when traveling outside the cities. The last ride some people just refused to use lower rated gas and we drove around looking for "better" fuel for thier bikes whether they really required it or not.

Rumor has it they are getting a new one? I seam to remember someone mentioning that.

well we did have a picnic table ambassador working hard on it, instead of a big S on his chest, he would have a V. lol not sure if the last nudge got rid of it, or new ones are on the way. the gal working didn't recall seeing one all year. i think i recall sitting on it this year, but hell I'm getting old and forgetful.

Yes it was there earlier this year! Vince and I along with some others stopped by it a couple times and even used it. Hmmmmmm..... Vince did tell them they needed to replace it and even sent me inside to tell them the same thing, lol, something about if they get enough complaints they will get a new one. I hope they plan to replace it, not just remove it.
Vince, we better go ride down there and see what's going on!

It is just amazing how many of these crashes are caused by deer. These pests should be confined to preserves like is done with bison. Certainly we have the capability to shrink the deer population 95%.
It just takes the political will which is sadly lacking these days.

Support your local deer poacher.

I've seen deer everywhere lately. Used to think they came out at dusk but have seen more of them mid-day around noon lately than any other time. Maybe I need to take up deer hunting!

the elderly driver had no clue she lost her granddaughter for several miles before realizing her window was blown out and her granddaughter missing.

That's scary as hell that she still has a license. I hate that elderly people are allowed to drive without having to prove competancy. Most of the ones I see on the road (usually because they almost caused an accident and don't even know it) are totally oblivious to what's going on around them. I hope when I'm no longer a safe driver my kids will be smart enought to take away my car keys.

I don't know much about goats but I wouldn't think that a goat would jump out like a deer does. I wonder what happened that caused him to not see it  ???

I've used a lot of headphones while riding and I really like the Bose in ear headphones. They are rubber and have 3 different sizes. Cost is $100 and you can even get them at Target. Sound quality is good and they fit well under my helmet. Some earbuds really "stick out" if your ear and are terrible under helmets but the Bose have a flatter shape which I like.

A rider should look in the general direction of the turn but move his eyes throughout the intended path: scan side to side and near to far, keeping eyes up and looking through the entire curve. Those who fixate on a given point in the distance might miss certain factors that are important for safety, such as surface conditions or objects in (or heading into) their immediate path of travel.  (like gravel!)

When I'm looking into a corner I still scan the road ahead of me for gravel, debris, etc... My head stays turned but my eyes shift up and down. I don't know if that's good or bad but it's what I've gotten used to doing. Learning to ride over the past year I've been told "look where you wanna go" many, many times and that I can always lean more. So now when I'm practicing corners I always say to myself "look and lean". There's been a few times when I have entered a corner and realized I was going too fast and every time I remember my lessons from Vince and Lloyd and even though I'm panicking I can always remeber two simple things.... LOOK AND LEAN! It helps to keep it simple so when those "oh shit" moments happen I can react without ending up in a ditch.

I've bought two Scorpion exo-1000 and love them. They have the air pumps inside that help make a better fit.

Hi Ryan.

I figured the MSTA forum could use another resident nerd.  ;)

Sam
