For all you long distance riding fans, do you think you could pull this off? I think I would have one tired butt after this ride

http://www.utah1088.com/TenInTenRally.pdf

I used to be much more interested in long-distance riding.  Now, not so much.  Maybe I've just gotten lazy, but it seems like when I think about doing an endurance ride now, I always think of a bunch of other ways to spend the time and money.  One of those other ways usually wins out.

We did a couple of group SaddleSore 1000s a few years back.  For the first one, Roger hosted a finishing party at his house.  Sanders lost his wallet somewhere in South Dakota.  On the second one, the route included lots of twisties, but we barely finished within the 24 hours.  I think those of us who rode both SS1Ks would say that the second one was tougher.  I remember leaving the last gas stop (somewhere along I-35 in Iowa I think), and Sanders wanting to take us south.  Good thing Roger (at least I think it was Roger) didn't follow him.

The toughest part of endurance riding, to me, isn't getting a sore butt.  A good seat makes that a non-issue.  The toughest part for me is staying alert.  Not just staying awake, but making sure that if I need to react to a hazard, I won't be in a zombie state and just run right into it.

What impresses me most about these guys is that even when their suspensions are bottoming and topping out, the riders stay relaxed.  Their bodies are absorbing the bumps and jumps instead of feeding it all back into the bikes.  That says a lot about their ability to concentrate and stay focused.  Very cool.

My first thought was "Why is that guy in the left lane when he's not even sliding!" And then I realized that this was Motorcycle News, and they're probably riding in England.

PLEASE people make sure you have a full tank at the
start of the ride!  Superhawks excepted.

So, you're saying Superhawks shouldn't top off before the ride?

hehe... Just kidding, Tony.  I know what you mean.

General Banter / Re: Trailer help
« on: July 27, 2010, 03:12:23 PM »
I know this isn't really helpful, but I'm wondering how important it is for the trailer to be level.  I can imagine it might be ideal to have the trailer level, but I mean really, how much difference can it really make if the hitch is a couple inches below level?

I'm not saying it won't make any difference.  I'm just asking what difference it might make, and how.  I pull a couple different trailers with a couple different vehicles, and it doesn't seem to make much difference whether I pull them level or not, other than which direction the contents migrates on bumpy rides.

Thanks.

Routes / Re: 07-25-10 Lloyd's Leading Let's Go Ride Ride

I uploaded three GPX files of Lloyds route (I fixed leg3 after Lloyd looked at my google maps and let me know my error). They should be correct.

Does anyone know where these files are?

Thanks!

What I meant is BRAKE HARD, and  maybe you could choose to take evasive move if you decide the braking bought you some time.  That is different than making the evasive move your first decision.

See, I'm easily confused.  Thanks for the clarification.

I still wonder whether swerving to avoid a live, mobile deer is ever a good idea.

You confuse me, PK^2.  First, you seem to recommend hard braking exclusively:

That is why I have only one strategy when it comes to deer.  BRAKE HARD (unless you are in a turn.)

Then you toss in evasive maneuvers
:
By braking you can give the deer more time to evade your path and you can close the speed as much as possible to minimize the impact.  Plus you might actually give yourself enough time to process and perform a possible evasion maneuver [emphasis added].

Which is kinda what I did.  I braked hard, and while braking, "decided" it might be a good idea to swerve instead, and then brake some more.  Turns out it wasn't the best choice.  At least not then and there.

It's possible, and safe, to brake, and then swerve, and then brake again, but I'm not sure it's a good idea when deer are involved.  If I have a choice, next time I'm going to stay on the brakes.  Until impact, if necessary.

But it seems to me that there is really no promising evasive strategy.  What are you supposed to do -- swerve to the far side to get ahead of it?  No chance in hell.  Swerve to the other side in hope to pass behind it?  Hit the brakes?  I mean, all of those things can prove fatal if the deer, like mine, takes evasive actions of its own.  Not even your speed in the first place would seem to make a difference.  In the end, just keeping the bike straight and aiming for the center didn't seem like such a bad strategy.

I agree.  I had always braked hard and let the deer get out of the way, until the time I braked hard, then decided that brakes weren't going to be enough,  swerved from the far-right side of the road to the middle, only to see the deer do the same.  Can I get a do-over, please?

But I'm not even sure we get to decide what we're gonna do when it happens.  I think our brains make a million decisions in an instant, and then our bodies just do what they're told.

Anyway, my next gadget will be a body-heat activated laser cannon that pulverizes anything that moves 1000 feet down the road...

Remind me not to ride ahead of you. :-\

What specifically would you like to see our troopers do to enforce motorcycle laws in MN?

A focus on enforcement (specific to motorcycles) of:
DUIs?
Speeding?
Careless Driving?

None of the above.  I wish they'd enforce the noise laws already on the books.

There also is an excellent article that is a must read IMO on page 16. In a nut shell the article talks about how all of us ride the exact way we like to ride, and then therefore by default ..... our way is the best and all others are suicidal maniacs. Keen insight into thinking before judging others riding styles.

Is this like the idea that "Anyone who rides slower than me needs lessons, and anyone who rides faster than me has a death wish"?  Or is it something completely different?

I know I feel that way sometimes.  But I do like riding with and watching people who ride faster than me.  Gives me some confidence that my tires will stick and that a little more speed won't necessarily cause me to crash.

Here is an example of pricing on a Michelin Pilot Power (what I am currently running):

I like these tires myself, and $178.98 for a pair of Michelin Pilot Powers is the best price I've seen in a while.  Nice find, Denyse!

I'd never heard of Jake Wilson until I saw their ad on Speed during the AMA race at RoadAmerica.  Are they new?
