Please get rid of this SSB nonsense from this thread
There were a few riders who went down on this ride. Is this not a crash thread? I think the reason it's been discussed so much is the organization of the ride and did it contribute to people going down. People were riding outside thier abilities to keep up. Of course that's the individual's fault, not SSB, but it's bringing a lot of nagative attention to them now.

Also like pkpk said, this could be a learning experience about large group rides. I could make a list of problems with quotes from people who went on the ride. If I were SSB I would certainly be paying attention to what's been stated so next time it can be a more positive outcome. I'm not trying to "smear" anyone's image. This doesn't make me like them anymore or anyless, just simply something to learn from.

They were doing wheelies which caught the cops attention. The reason they were treated like this is they refused to pull over. Listen to the audio, the cops had been following them with lights and sirens on, the riders even acknowledged the cops but kept going even increasing speed. I think that's when things really started going downhill. And we still don't know if they had warrants or something else to make matters worse.

Besides this pullover there were multiple accidents on that ride. A couple bikes collided when one rear-ended another aomewhere around 212. And apparently some girl on a cruiser went down. It was stated that she appeared to be riding outside her ability.

Then there was this one.... the guy's helmet flew off his head even, I don't know how he is doing but here's a video from another forum of the scene.
Kick off ride crash site

There has been a lot of threads and discussions all over the oher forums and FB about this ride. I wasn't there but I'm hearing the same things over and over by many riders. The group was large and they had problems keeping everyone together on busy roads (go figure) and someone posted who was in the back that riders were going 120-130mph to keep up with the group at some points (he said he even was up to 160 at one point himself). The group kept getting seperated due to traffic and sounds like a fair amount of riders just left the ride due to being seperated and not wanting to ride like idiots to keep up. I'm sure there were some positives as well but that's not what everyone wants to talk about. Anyways, that's the word on the streets, or well the internet  :)

it's a downhill, decreasing radius ramp.  The decreasing radius curve combined with the fact that some people don't seem to be able to see the oncoming traffic until they're about to merge

So it's downhill, decreasing radius and difficult to see the exit (if I'm understanding you correctly). Wouldn't that be good enough reason enough to slow down and keep your distance from someone in front of you?

BTW I'm not trying to criticize, I wish more information was provided about these accidents. It is interesting to read these "stories" and try to piece together what might have happened and how it might have been avoided. It's always less painful to learn from others mistakes.

4 BIKES 8 PEOPLE TRAVELING WB HWY 14 ENTRANCE RAMP TO HWY 169 SB. TRAFFIC SLOWING AT BOTTOM OF THE RAMP. ALL 4 DRIVERS LOST CONTROL AND TIPPED BIKES OVER ATTEMPTING TO AVOID COLLISION.

what 4 bikes ?? all laid it down avoiding slowing traffic ?? wow, ...

No kidding! All four of them had no other choice but to lay the bikes down? Something is very wrong with that picture. Without knowing what actually happened I'm guessing that thier first mistake was they were all following way to close.

The lead-in grabber kills it for me.  "Afton City Council has decided to take a stand against motorcyclists."  There is nothing fair and balanced about a sentence like that.

I agree. It makes me feel as though the members of that city council dislike all motorcyclists. They have to take a stand against us? It comes off pretty biased, like everyone one of us rides through that town causing problems.

The fact he said "I couldn't stop behind him" makes me believe he was following too close. So his only option, in his mind, was to go around. But he didn't know the truck was turning because the truck driver was being irresponsible and unsafe driving at night and without signals. I still believe as well the majority of liability lies with the bike rider but that truck driver is partly to blame too. Both drivers made bad decisions and unfortunately ended up badly for the passenger.

Welcome Chris! Glad to see you made it over here. I think you will find you like riding with members here more than ZG.

BTW, even though blinkers or brake lights were not working, I think the majority of the liability rests on the following vehicle (the rider in this case).
I agree, as you pointed out he did not have situational awareness and attempted to make an illegal pass on top of that. Ultimately its up to him to maneuver safely on the road . However isn't it the law that turn signals and brake lights be working? If the rider of the motorcycle had been able to see the truck signaling his turn then he probably wouldn't have tried to make that pass. Of course it wouldn't be the first time someone turned without signaling. I also agree that once the truck started slowing down that the rider on the bike should've been more aware, that should've been a clue something was up.

Problem # 1... blinkers are not working AND brake lights not working! this guy shouldn't have been on the road driving like that, he was just an accident waiting to happen
the left blinker light on Ziemer’s 1960 Ford pickup wasn’t working. Both Caddell and Vanderlinde said Ziemer’s brake lights weren’t working either

Problem # 2 another example of not obeying the law

Caddell was passing Ziemer in a no-passing zone and their two vehicles collided as Ziemer turned left on to Rabbit Road.

Problem # 3 speaks for itself

She was wearing Capri pants and flip flops

Despite having her foot amputated

The combination of no gear with the "law-breaking" of both parties = completely avoidable accident, very sad outcome

Well I was able to hit 100, going off the speedometer. If I can figure out a way to mount my gps on the bike where I can see it while tucked and won't loose it i'll try the same spot sometime and see what it reads for comparison.

Any others?

How about those people who think they're God's gift to motorcycling  ::)

How annoying! And to answer Vanders last question in the OP... yes! Those guys certainly did no favors to the public image of bikers. The public only remembers the bikers going really fast and weaving through traffic or the really slow ones that are holding everyone up.

Unfortunately this underscores the image hit we suffer.  Instead of "Motorcyclist hits child, then flees", it should have read, "Douchebag hits child....."  The really bad thing here is, since the guy spoke with a Jamaican accent, he is probably on a plane back there already.

I just heard about it on fox 9 news. It was some 25yr old guy on a sportbike, speeding down a side street and hit a 4 yr old who is now in critical condition. Guys name was Ernest Jonas and he lived in St Paul and was said to be seen driving "radically" and "popping wheelies" and had been asked to slow down while in the neighborhood. So when he hit that little kid they knew who it was, just had to find him. What a sack of shit! And giving sportbike riders a bad name!
