General Banter / Re: anyone been to Barber before?

Yes I sure did! Problem is my videos are all over 15 min so I cant post em up to youtube. I don't know how to edit and shorten vids so... I'll try to get someone to help me with it and post one of mine. I have a lot of pictures too I could post.

I use MPEG Streamclip to trim my gopro videos down, if all you need to do is trim them it is hard to beat the simplicity and it's FREE! :)

Damn, I heard about the collision but just assumed it was a love tap in a braking zone, didn't realize it was mid-corner. Glad both of you kept it upright. Kind of looks like he was taking a wider line then you and when you came around him and cut back towards the inside you clipped him, in any case glad the only damage was a scuffed exhaust canister!  :o

He got some nice footage of you for the rest of the session too, nice riding.  8)

While all the videos I shot this summer/fall on forum rides were 960p/180 FOV, I switched to 1080p/127 FOV recently and shot the above track videos in it. Besides the higher res which makes it look sharper, with the narrower field of view it is possible for something to look "close" in the shot without actually rubbing tires. :)

Thanks!  ;D

Used the Trackmaster Android app on my phone, paired with a 10hz bluetooth GPS puck (QStarz 818xt) to capture the data. Then used Dashware software to combine and synchronize the video and overlay. The process is manual, but it's pretty easy. In the software you can set the sync point where you think it's close (I set the stop/start line on the actual stop/start line which made a great point of reference) then hit play and watch the location marker travel around the track in very high res which makes it easy to check your sync point. Both video's took me about 30s to sync. The phone app worked so well I'm considering holding off on getting an expensive dedicated GPS lap timer next season

It kind of looks like you weren't used to the rider in front of you, who slowed, or was carrying a slower speed then you expected, through the apex of the left hander. You then rolled off the throttle to avoid running up too close, drifted wide as bikes will do on trailing throttle and then eventually grabbed a handful of brake and mashed the guardrail. Close?

What's your recollection of the chain of events?

Wow, beautiful area for sure!  I've been to Arkansas a few times, this would be a trip I'd be interested in sometime.  :)

+1!

Would love to get out there Fall of 2012 or Spring of 2013...

The J.Lo car! lol, sure the ads haven't affected your perception of that little car Greg? ;D

Why is the rest of the world diving cars that have been getting better gas milage than our for years?

The distance we drive was already brought up, as was American's propensity for bigger is better. Another reason is that European's suffer from high fuel tarriff's. Gas in Britian in September (if my math is right) was $8.24/gal! (1.357 pounds per liter.) If I had to pay over $8 a gallon I would certainly be driving something that got 50mpg's, like a motorcycle! :)

Heading down to Barber Motorsports park in Birmingham,AL in mid November with a group of 7-8 ZARS regulars for back to back trackdays. Can't wait to check out a track with a perfect surface and elevation change, and enjoy some spirited riding in the middle of November!  ;D Will be cool to check out the motorcycle museum on site as well.

General Banter / Re: how many sets of Tires did you go through this year?
« on: October 21, 2011, 08:22:30 AM »
I believe I am on my 7th set of tires this season, not counting the new ones I'm having mounted this Saturday. 15,000 miles of mostly twisty riding (I don't commute on my bike), 2 DCTC days, and 4 big trackdays (MAM/BIR) contributed to the fast wear I 'spose. I ran exclusively BT-016's until this last set when I switched to BT-003RS's. I got as high as 4500 miles out of the 016's and as low as a 1000 (both AR trips ate an entire new set of tires in ~1000 miles.) The BT-003's wore out the middle in ~2500 miles of street riding, but should be great for trackdays. (Shoulder grip is amazing!)

I called my tire guy earlier this week and he greeted me with "Ben, I don't have any more damn tires to sell you!", then on learning I really did a new set 9 days after I had them mount the current set he went "You should get sponsored by Bridgestone the way you burn through them!". I wish... :)

General Banter / Re: Most fun ride of 2010
« on: October 10, 2011, 05:39:13 PM »
My favorite ride of 2010 was the ZARS track day at Mid-America in October.  The weather was perfect, and I don't think I've ever felt more confident and focused while riding.  That was one of my most fun riding days ever.

That was my first "big track" trackday and was awesome, but ranks 2nd to my CO trip last summer for best ride of 2010. Rode out to CO for the Pikes Peak hill climb, then circled CO, then rode up to the Black Hills via the scenic route, rode the black hills, then rode home. An epic 4200 mile ride! :)

Is it too early to start a new thread for favorite ride of 2011?
