General Banter / Re: Zalusky riding school ??

Yes, a few of us on here are Lead Instructors.   I'd be happy to help you decide whether ZARS is the best program for you.   Everyone comes away with new understanding and skills.  We spend some time addressing street situations as well as using track techniques to improve rider skill.  Some other programs are more racer prep focussed, but we try to balance what people are interested in.

ZARS is structured and mixes class info with on course practice.   You can get improvements by riding with many of the seasoned riders on this site and talking techique while stoped, but the ratio of time talking wil be much lower and you may not progress as quickly.  Our instructor to rider ratio last year was 1 instructor to 3 riders, so you hear many different views and sometimes the way one of us phrases a concept just "clicks" for one of the students.   Most of us are volunteers and that is why the cost is still so reasonable.

My favorite part of the program is Friday nights.  Spend a few hours on your skill on Friday night and then go for a long ride on Saturday and use what you just learned.  I think registration just opened, so there are plenty of slots available.

Feel free to PM me or BDawg or post your question here.  There is also a lot of info on the Zars subforum on MNSBR.

+1 to staying still at slow speeds and move around when going straight at higher speeds.   I let my passenger steer to understand how they add input.  Go to a parking lot, you sit still at about 15 mph but have the passenger move around.  if your hands are loose on the bar the passenger will instantly get the understanding how they impact the bike. check the attached picture to see that I am in line with the bike and my son (at that point 200#) is doing the leaning for both of us.  We were prety fast in the twisties as a team.
-1 to advice to passenger not looking over your inside shoulder until later.  Start from day one or it will be a bad habit to break later.  Also, turning while looking straight doesn't feel good to the passenger.
Develop hand signs for OK, somethings wrong, need a break, and look at that cool thing.  I also use one for "hold tight".
Practice hard stops later and have her reach around you and brace herself against the tank.
My very first web page (more than a decade ago!) was on 2-up riding hints.  I just saw the files on my back up drive last week.

Done!   Funny, I was just telling someone that I wasn't missing riding and then I took your survey!

I too can't walk in AStitch combat boots, even tried soaking them in water overnight.
I like A-Stars, they fit well and are easy to walk in.  they can be adjusted for narrow calves with velcro.  I am on the last miles of an older pair of Webs and have a pair of Sohos to replace them.

Also check the NESBA forum too.   I sold a Vanson to Jim Hubert a few months ago that would fit you.  I think he decided not to use it.   You could find Jim over on MNSBR if you wanted to ask him.

We also didn't talk about how the rider's lower body wasn't anchored to the bike as strongly as his upper body.  Therfore, when things started going down-hill, he started sliding off with his lowerbody first and was hanging from the bars - making a bad situation worse.  That wasn't quick-thinking, intential steering into the skid, that was his body tension doing that.

Anyone else come to a similar conclusion?

I think most of us default to an early apex/inside line especially if we are a little nervous.  It's a bad habit which I think results from wanting to get the turn started.
And from lack of confidence in, or skill of, making a quick flick turn.   I like the phrase "lazy cornering" which explains some peoples' need to start turning early and take a lazy path around the corner.

This is a good example for our other discussion about body position.  Look how his helmet is on the upside of the bike which reduced his ground clearance.  This is what I was referring to in my post that many times you can succeed with poor body position, but eventually you may need every inch of clearance.

Many people turn bikes for decades that way on the street - and don't crash.  Even racers can suceed with bad position (see all the good comparison pictures in Lee Park's book, Total Control).  As Ty said, that style isn't optimal, and leaves less safety margin when an unexpected thing happens.  I like this old british article as a visual tool.

I has Camry - goes very fast (sometimes even when I don't want it to :o  ).
My Kendon is old school; the angle on the tounge is different in gen 2, which is what you sound like you have.

Just buy a 2" ball with long threaded rod and shim it up the 1+" you need.  As long as you have threads left for the nut and the nut is tight, you're fine.
