General Banter / Like Father, Like Son
« on: November 06, 2011, 10:45:12 PM »
This saddens me to no end.  Not for the obvious, but for the irony.

http://www.startribune.com/local/133336578.html

"The patrol's report said Byro is not suspected of alcohol use but wasn't wearing a helmet. David Byro, who also has a motorcycle, said he doesn't wear a helmet either. "The accident happened not for lack of a helmet," he said. "It happened because somebody did something wrong.""

I feel very sorry for the family of this vet, laying in the hospital with a brain injury.  But it seems lost on the father that had the son been wearing a helmet, he would probably be home today nursing just broken bones.  Yes, someone caused the accident, but the choice of no helmet winds up the bigger factor in the outcome.

.......it appears that you were barely speeding and barely slowing down.  again, pure speculation on my part.  perhaps the decrease in speed from 70 (tops, maybe more like 65) to 59 when you stopped (*ouch!*) was more influential than i think it was, but like a lot of crashes

I saw 82 on the speedo as he was exiting the first mild curve.  The point I made (earlier) was that sort of speed on Wis 95 is begging for all sorts of things to go wrong.  Not to mention, Joe Law comes around the corner and you're going to be making a donation to the county.

I wonder if they were still drunk from an all nighter.  One expects those shenanigans at 2 am, not 7:30 am.

It's amazing they didn't nail early morning joggers and bicyclists.

There may be another factor at play in this incident......

Yeah, well if you read the whole thread......    :)

Cups, boxes, road paint, strange bike, no linked brakes, rider braking in a corner etc, etc.....

Yet not many talk about the extreme speed coming down a hill on a curvy road with guardrails.  No wonder you're at the whim of so many variables.

Just one of the old guys here, kindly reminding you young guys to ride the motorbike on the public roads to smell the flowers.  Go to the racetrack to get the speed out of your system.

BTW, kudos for having the courage to "put it out there".  Not many would have the balls to do this and I admire that.

Greg that all sounds so peaceful, you need to get a sled buddy and let that adrenalin flow.

Variety is the spice of life. No apologies.  :)

Greg's got the stress management thing down.  (Speaking as one who has a similar lifestyle.)

Probably because they bounce off things and tumble down the road.  Too bad the occupants wind up with scrambled brains after 20+ rolls.

Heading back over to Bangkok for work.  This time I am damned determine to get my hands on one of those 90cc sportbikes and zip around the rice paddies.  Course it sounds like boats are a better mode of transportation right now.  :)

Following distance goes out the window at rush hour though.  There is no way you will be able to keep a 200' cushion unless you are slowing down, leading drivers behind you to tailgate and zip around you to fill the gap.  I found all one can really do is keep your wits and ride staggered and make sure you are ready to take evasive action.  I quit riding rush hour because it's just too dangerous on a bike IMO.

I like the new format.  That's a bonus considering that this site is FREE.

I have not been harsh with my judgments of other sites.

IMO, I didn't see any particular harsh attitude toward any particular board on MN-MSTA.  Certainly not like the vitrolic postings about ZG on other forums.  But I don't claim to read every posting so maybe I missed something.

I made one comment about watching a train of 25 bikes pull away from me on my one and only MNSBR ride.  It was a factual observation, nothing more...no pontificating, no particular point....nothing.  But I know, at least, one person who seemed to take offense and I wonder if this wasn't what motivated Yul.  The irony is, they could post about all the old, MN-MSTA farts riding slow on their rides over there and I would have agreed with them.  Sometimes I wonder if humans lost their ability to ignore what mildly offends them.
