So many of the skills involved in good motorcycling are counter-intuitive and need to be drilled into our melons with repetition, repetition, repetition.

No question.

It's humbling.

Good productive discussion.

I had not thought of looking around corners with counter leaning, every little bit of height does help.

Interesting idea that people default to counter-leaning when riding at a comfortable pace.  While I don't question that most/all on these rides would switch to shifting weight to the inside if going quicker, leaving aside stretching and maximizing vision, why ride counter to best technique when going slower?

I find that when I feel uncomfortable with a corner I throw out good technique.  I "forget" proper; weight on the inside peg, pushing on the inside bar, etc. I instead start counter-leaning.  Bad Elk.    I want the instinctive default to be maximizing traction, the ability to turn and maintain control.  Bad habits are really hard to change.

Great eye, Lloyd.  I had not noticed the sparks.

Tim, I like the late apex approach on the street.  I can see more around the corner and have my choice of exit lines.  With an early apex you are committed to a wide exit and the inability to avoid a vehicle crossing the center line, gravel, etc.

That being said, I think most of us default to an early apex/inside line especially if we are a little nervous.  It's a bad habit which I think results from wanting to get the turn started.

My read is that hard parts started to drag - a bit too much lean for how the bike is set up - and the bike pivoted on the parts on the ground.

It was a low side until the rear started sliding, trying to catch the front.  Once the bike was sideways to the direction of travel it finally caught, resulting in a high side and launching the rider.

As mentioned above, he my have tried to tighten the turn with the rear brake and used too much.

There are others here much more knowledgeable than I however.

I've done this.  I also do it occasionally do stretch; any new motion feels good after being on the bike for an hour or more.

What surprised me however is how many make every turn in this fashion.  Thus the question.

General Banter / Body Position?
« on: October 09, 2010, 05:14:16 PM »
I have been surprised to observe on recent rides that most of us lean counter to the direction of the corner in a crossed-up body position.

That is, instead of leaning in the direction of the turn most lean to the outside.  This increases the lean of the bike and looks awkward.  It does decrease any chicken strip width however.  :)

I'm not in a position to be critical, most of you are faster than me.  But leaning to the outside is counter to what I have been told/read is proper body position.

This leads me to wonder if there is a benefit to leaning to the outside that I am not aware of.  I am also curious if those of you that ride corners crossed up know you are doing so.

I also wonder if I have a tendency to do this also even though I am actively thinking to put weight on the inner peg and to lean into the corner. (Feel free to comment on what I do if you have helpful suggestions.)

Thoughts?

General Banter / Get out and Ride! It's wonderful!

If you can justify taking a day off, do so.

I rode the alphabets today.  The roads are in good shape, the weather was glorious and the views spectacular.  Color!  Vistas!

It really is a special time to ride.

(Last year this week it rained almost all week with highs in the low fifties, and next week it snowed twice).

Even with the extra goodies, the new Ducati 1198 SP is also a bit cheaper than last year's model.

Lots of interesting new bikes.  Both astounding power and technology.

Pretty wild.

The roads will be a mess.

I hope homes are not seriously damaged.

PT seems really slow, but I only started Thursday.

I could take the splint off Wednesday of last week, except for evenings (after multiple casts, not having something on my arm and hand is wonderful!)

It hurts all of the time with sudden, sharp pain on movement.  This sucks.  <whine>

However, it is already improving.  Range of motion is a bit better.  I have a tad more strength.

Only two months to go!  :P

Thank you for posting the pics, Ray.  I didn't think of linking the seller's.  But they are really BIG:)

First PT appointment today.  I can't wait to get more flexibility and strength back.

Thanks for the positive comments!

The new-to-me bike is here!

I am the delighted new caretaker of a Ducati 1098S Tricolore.

Wonderful, babied machine at a price that I could not pass up.  Delightful seller - I still have not gotten through all of the great stuff he sent me separately.

I have been out for just a couple of rides so far as my still healing arm and wrist will not put up with much.

Great bike; easy to ride, quick turn-in (light wheels), wonderful brakes, more than enough power.

I am using learning the new bike as an opportunity to re-assess my riding - it's a great combo, try to get rid of any old bad habits and work on skills while a new bike forces me to think.

I was lucky to run into Ray at Minneapolis Ducati (Friday?) as he was picking up one of his machines.  Thus, while I don't have pictures I have a witness.  ;D

I just sampled some of those recommend... they seem more funky.  But maybe I sampled the wrong songs.   ???

You're right - a lot of fusion in flyinlow's list.

TK's lists are of straight ahead jazz classic artists - excellent stuff.
