General Banter / Re: Route postings that users may not want made public
« on: October 24, 2010, 12:44:27 PM »
The way I see it, these routes are kinda like a hunters, or fisherman's favorite spot. Its nice to share with a friend once in a while, but you certainly don't want the whole world to know. There are already plenty of roads that are known for sportbike action. And quite frankly I'm surprised that cops don't set up shop in these stretches and start handing out more tickets. So its kinda nice to keep some of the less common "fun" roads, only known to a smaller group of riders.

General Banter / Re: DEER!

"A man killed Sunday in a motorcycle accident was Thomas C. White of Clear Lake, Minn. White, 63, was riding on Hwy. 169 near Garrison, in Crow Wing County, when he hit a deer about 1 a.m."

This hits home for me, This is someone that I knew. I didnt think it would have made the paper already though. He was better known as Grizz, and was well known in the Harley M/C club world.

+1 on the Sylvania Silverstars. Although not an HID, they are an improvement over stock. The headlight housing on my bike is flawed, and creates an abrupt cut off on low beam. Its like some one taped off the top third of the head lamp lens. High beam dosnt do this and lights up great. Being H-4 bulbs, the only way to cure the low beam cut off is to raise the light beam, efectively making high beam too high. It seams this is a known problem for Sprints, and early Daytonas. So HID's on this bike really wouldnt be a bennifit. The Sylverstars on the other hand improve the quality of the light its self, closer to day light, and do get more light out to the side of the bike, just not in front of it. So the few bucks for these bulbs, I think, is well worth it.

General Banter / Re: Why are they not wearing gloves???
« on: June 05, 2010, 12:03:23 AM »
Well after 2 pages of this, I decided to put away my thin mechanics gloves and buy some actual riding gloves for summer use, as I have heavy thick ones for cold riding.I'm pleasantly happy w/ how comfortable these are. I think most people that don't wear safety gear look at riding like driving their car or truck. I mean you wouldn't put on a fire suit, helmet, 5 point harness just to drive down to the groceries store? And on the other hand, if you were gonna run a Vett or camaro on a road track, you'd want safety gear because you know your gonna push it and exploit its performance, and safety becomes more of a concern. So it would seam safety to us is more of a concern as we enjoy the performance of our bikes, but, probably not so much to the guy that just meanders down the road looking at the pretty flowers.

Wow Jeff, glad to here that you went in and got checked out. Too many times we, myself included, try to tough it out until we cant take the pain or sickness. Hopefully you have a lot of vacation time to offset being off of work for awhile. Hope the recovery goes good.

The Dennis Kirk scratch and dent store in Rush City always seamed to have a large selection and lower prices. But they may or may not have your brand, color, size. Its been a few years since I've been there,

Bike Help / Re: Independent cruiser/Harley shop?

Yes $600 does seam high, maybe they really didn't want the work and bid it high? I was assuming that you already had bars to put on, but maybe they added an extra 150-$200 for bars and grips in your quote. If you already had bars and grips I would think the ball park of $290-$300 would be more appropriate. You may want to ask how long for labor, and how much for parts when you get quotes. That might help rationalize their prices. Also, if your speedo/tach currently mount to your handle bar. But you want bars that don't allow that, the gauges will have to be remounted, and possibly wires extended. Again adding more labor, raising the quote price. I think these days, shops just bid it high so the customer doesn't freak out if it ends up costing more than the original quote.

Unless your going from high bars (apes), to say drag bars. A little extra length, or larger loop in the cables / hoses is fine, unless its a looks thing for you. But in that case, dont forget about your throttle cable or cables also. An independent shop may not be all that much cheaper as parts will probably cost more than the labor. Shorter clutch cable, throttle cable, brake hose, brake fluid to bleed the brakes, primary cover gasket and fluid to replace clutch cable. I would say 1-2 hours would be ample provided the bars aren't internally wired. That said, V-tech in Anoka is the only shop in the metro I have used. And that is only for dyno tuning, or head machining.

No, not new, still the old Triumph from last year. I just dont have any pictures of it to use in my avatar as I know its some times helpful to reference ones bike with the person. So, the "old" bike is the Harley I had prior. I only had that bike on two rides with the group here. I did do some updating over winter though, and it feels like a new-er bike. I even got a tank bag, with map pouch.
