General Banter / Where's the home page?
« on: July 06, 2011, 12:34:59 PM »
Maybe it has been asked and answered elsewhere (in which case please nuke this thread):

I'm missing the old home page.  I really liked the feature that you got a quick overview of all new messages.  Can I find that somewhere else now?

General Banter / Had my day in court
« on: July 06, 2011, 12:32:40 PM »
Ok, reverting back to the original topic...

I had my day in court today.  So this is what I can say about handling a speeding ticket in Pierce County:
  • First of all, you have to enter a plea of Not Guilty.  This can be done by fax.  No one will talk to you before that.
  • A Pre-Trial Conference will be scheduled about two weeks after the Initial Appearance date stated on your citation.  That's your first chance to talk to anyone.  Tried to call the DA before but got stonewalled.
  • At the Pre-Trial Conference, there are two people in the court room, the court commissioner presiding, and the district attorney negotiating (if so inclined).  You can chose to call in by phone --  but it's your choice whether to be a nice guy sitting at the defense table, or a creaky voice out of the conference call device perched on the commissioner's bench.
  • I don't want to spoil the chances for others by dragging the details of these proceedings out into the public view.  I will just say that I found everyone involved (court commissioner and DA) to be very decent people.  I went in modestly, did not try to bullshit anyone, no phony excuses.  The only thing I offered was a spotless driving record of 25 years which certainly helped.  And I made some (what I thought) reasonable proposals how to settle the matter.
So my bottom line is -- it's certainly worthwhile making the trip.

Thanks for all the advice from people here and particularly from Elk!

Off Topic / Re: Looking to explore new music
« on: June 07, 2011, 12:46:26 AM »
Wow, what an amazingly musical bunch here.  My own (somewhat neglected) passion is the piano, even though I play strictly as an amateur for home consumption.  I sure admire those who play in an orchestra or other (semi-)professional capacity.

Even though it seems that the OP has withdrawn from the conversation -- maybe still shellshocked from Das Lied von der Erde? -- I would second the recommendation to let things develop over time.  And I personally find getting acquainted with "new" music much easier in a life performance than from a recording.  That's particularly true with the large symphonic orchestras we are talking about here.

Also, as to symphonic works, I'd look to include some of the less popular contemporariers, like Bruch, Bruckner, or Saint-Saëns.  Everyone has their individual style, but they are part of a development that may be worthwhile to follow along if Mahler initially appears too intimidating.

General Banter / Re: Motorcycle Passing - Chase - Road Rage
« on: June 06, 2011, 11:09:55 PM »
No comment on the video, but I have to say that I am amazed how many nice drivers you meet on the road.  Whether it's the farmer on his tractor giving you a friendly wave, or people pulling over to let you pass (which happened to me the very first time in Minnesota recently, but seems to be standard etiquette in places like Arkansas).  And yesterday up north an oncoming pick-up moved almost into the shrubs on his side on the (wide enough) gravel road to protect me a little from his dust cloud.  Amazingly considerate guy.

Honestly, if I was trying to earn a meager living from tilling my fields, and had those unproductive city dwellers on their noisy bikes going by all day, I'm not sure how friendly I'd be.

I guess bottom line is it takes a little judgement how much liberties you can take in any given situation.  Live and let live seems a good rule of thumb on the road...

All speeding" is just a fine" unless it is excessive or repetitive and triggers a license suspension, etc.  What's the statute on the citation?

Well, not quite -- a fine, and a record of the conviction on your driving record (which then entails the consequences not prescribed by law but by your insurance policy).

Joel's neighbor might have been referring to the fact that he was written up as 64, and that's just below the 65+ threshold that would put it on the driving record in MN (assuming it was in a 55 zone).  Basically Joel already got the break from a sympathetic cop that I'm still trying to get from the DA...

Elk, thanks for the great writeup, and thanks also to your colleague who volunteered all that information.

I am just a little confused by the comment on the DAs playing hardball with MN residents.

In MN, speeding convictions of no more than 10 mph over won't go on the record.  So all it takes is the charge to be dropped from 70 to 65 mph.  For WI, that wouldn't make a difference because all speeding violations from 1 to 15 over fall in the same bracket and carry the exact same fine. So one would think that would be easy enough to do for the DA, if he wanted to be nice, without hurting Pierce County's revenue.  Where is my logic wrong?

Unless anybody here has any more specifics on the people to deal with in Pierce county I'll just make a cold call to their office and hope for the best.  (Am I really the only idiot who ever got clocked on WI-35?)

Thanks for all the feedback so far with which I very much agree.  I find that most people have an inclination to be helpful when asked respectfully.

I'll check to see if I can find out anything specific about Pierce county.

That would be great.  I was hoping that someone had specific experience there as to what would be the best approach -- sort of like the stuff people know about Dakota county.

Before you give me the "man up and pay" speech... yes I will.

But if there is a reasonable way to protect my squeaky-clean driving record, it would be silly not to do that.  My understanding is that WI offenses do get usually reported to MN.  Has anyone any practical experience with asking for leniency regarding the reporting, or pleading guilty to a non-moving violation instead?

Would one preferably talk to the prosecutor, a hearing officer, the judge?  The venue is Pierce county, WI (it wa on WI-35 south of Prescott, 70 in 55 zone) -- with Prescott in their jurisdiction, I assume that they are not extremely sympathetic to two-wheeled speeders...

General Banter / Flood Run Sept 18
« on: September 10, 2010, 04:28:47 PM »
Just as I was about to figure out the gourmet issues in Arcadia I ran into a huge snafu.  I wanted to take a few people on a ride into Wisconsin on Sept 18.  But now I learned about that Flood Run the same day and found that pretty scary.

What's the consensus on riding that day -- just forget it, or would it be ok once you reach the hinterland?  Is there any general experience about the dynamics of that thing?  Do they pretty much all start at the same time and location (it's scheduled for 10:30), so that one could stay ahead of the crowd if we'd want to cross over to some alphabet roads?  Will they pretty much stay on WI-35?  Or will the entire area be teeming with drunk riders from early in the morning?

Thanks for the quick replies!  The Kwik Trip sure is nice as far as Kwik Trips go.  But with the people I have in tow I had hoped for finding something more, how shall I say... regional.  I never thought of Arcadia as a great place for eating out but geographically it's the outer limit for the kind of ride I'm looking at.  I may run down there this weekend and look at some of Brent's suggestions.

Does anyone know if any of the restaurants in or around Arcadia are recommendable for a lunch break?  Doesn't have to be gourmet but should be clean and good quality food.

General Banter / Re: DEER!
« on: July 20, 2010, 12:02:07 AM »
Brake, absolutely.  But frankly, I don't even recall if I got to the brakes before it was over.  I just know that I was going 20 mph for quite a while afterwards -- with those adrenaline levels I would have made an emergency stop for even a turtle on the road (so much for Chris' question ;)).

Not getting to the brakes might have been just as well, given that the deer evaded around my rear-end.  Hard braking might have made a side impact to the rear more likely.   (Ouch.)

So take all the things we do or don't do for whatever reason, and add the things the deer does or doesn't do, and you get just what Allon saiid --

there is a factor of luck (or bad luck) to all of this.

-- for which we can be grateful every day we ride home safely.  The only thing we can do is to ensure we don't push our luck any harder than absolutely necessary.

But I'm not even sure we get to decide what we're gonna do when it happens.  I think our brains make a million decisions in an instant, and then our bodies just do what they're told.

Fully agreed.  My only conscious thought was sizing up the guy and thinking a straight impact would be survivable (pure speculation, of course).  I didn't plan, or aim, or anything like that.  I guess there would have been a different level of panic, and more likely some silly and painful maneuver, if the thing had been moose-sized. But whether the thought was related at all to what I was doing, or what I was doing was just dictated by the inability to do something else -- no idea.

Anyway, my next gadget will be a body-heat activated laser cannon that pulverizes anything that moves 1000 feet down the road...
Remind me not to ride ahead of you. :-\

I think that's called "collateral damage".  A small price to pay for my personal safety.  :D

Today on Buffalo Co Rd J I had a near miss that has me wondering if it isn't always a lottery, no matter day or night.

The frustrating thing is that I saw nothing coming, despite broad daylight.  The deer materialized out of "nowhere" on the left, almost behind me, dashing across the road with perfect timing to intercept me.  About as big as my V-Strom -- my only thought: "that should give me have a fair chance..."

A split second before impact the guy abandoned its suicidal attempt to cross in front of me, turned slightly forward and came alongside. About eye-to-eye with my rearview mirror.  I fully expectecd its momentum to slam it into my rear end and looked back in amazement when there was no "whack" from behind -- it safely finished crossing behind my bike.

One thing is for sure, these guys have amazing cornering skills. ;)

But it seems to me that there is really no promising evasive strategy.  What are you supposed to do -- swerve to the far side to get ahead of it?  No chance in hell.  Swerve to the other side in hope to pass behind it?  Hit the brakes?  I mean, all of those things can prove fatal if the deer, like mine, takes evasive actions of its own.  Not even your speed in the first place would seem to make a difference.  In the end, just keeping the bike straight and aiming for the center didn't seem like such a bad strategy.

Well, I drove on humbly praising my luck many times.  Particularly when I passed my guy's supersized cousin, not even a quarter mile down the road, dead, among a collection of glass and debris that must have left a nasty dent in someones car...

Anyway, my next gadget will be a body-heat activated laser cannon that pulverizes anything that moves 1000 feet down the road...

Ray, I uploaded two GPS files if anyone wants to use them.  No warranties expressed or implied etc. etc.  Don't blame me if you end up on a gravel road -- I never trust these Garmin algorithms -- but then, my V-Strom doesn't mind so much. ;D

The V-Strom is a fun bike.  It's not high tech but Suzuki make a reasonably bulletproof bike that can do just about anything.  Good thing it's cheap [...]

It's not cheap, it has an excellent price/performance ratio. 8)  No offense taken, not even for calling my bike low-tech. ;)
