Hi Mark - I think I might own one of your previous Yamahas ;)
Welcome to the forum. I just added a Gen2 to the stable (after being too late on a used Gen 3).

As a former owner, +1 on Vince's comment about straightline only. Also quite expensive for the 1700 and pretty limited fuel & comfort range. The new Honda F6B got very positive reviews for comfort and handling in MCN if you need to have a luxo-barge. The K1200LT might be a good alternative if you are looking older/used.

Allon, sent you a PM on the earphones. I'll take them if you still have them

Earlier this year I went riding with my friend John who lives in north San Diego county. He had just received a 696 monster from his wife for his 78th birthday. He still has 5 bikes in the garage, goes all over the western US and rides offroad with his (adult) kids & grandkids regularly. He's still very smooth in the twisties and can still do the long days (although he has switched to the cruisers for the long stuff). He has no special regimen other than walking a lot with his dogs. Like Gramps I will ride until I can't, and it's nice to know that there is something like the Spyder out there if i get to the point where that is the best option.

It's Pete Best's mum, and she's still bitter about it.

Before we go too far down the road on fast food bashing I'd like to point out a couple of upsides to eating at McD or wherever that may not have been considered:

1) Fairly accurate nutrional information. Any successful dieter will tell you that tracking what you are consuming is job one.
2) Portion Control.

Seriously, you can eat <reasonably> healthy at McD. The grilled chicken is pretty good from a caloric & fat standpoint and the fish sandwich is OK if you custom it without the big dollop of tartar sauce. All the major fast food chains have now gone to trans-fat free cooking oils so fries are less of a no-no than they were in the past.

Not at all (too far). I think the second one gets more at the root of the problem.

It's the beard. ;)

My max is 42k in 1983...but I lived in CA and had no other wheels. 100k is indeed mind-boggling.

Dang. And here I thought we were going to have a thread about the seminal Faith No More album of the same name...

As you were.

Done.

If the wording of the ice section of question #7 was changed from 'possibility' to 'likelihood' then it would change my answer. I won't ride if I think it is likely there will be ice on the road, but a possibility would not keep me off the bike. As an example. if it rained overnight and the low was below freezing, then very little chance I would ride the next morning. If I was touring the Rockies and the runoff crossing the road might be icy, then it's an acceptable risk to be managed accordingly. BTDT.

Ray - I've ridden to/from Miller WSB 3 of the last 4 years and I think your chances might be better than they appear. I did not go this year, but the 2009 race was also late May. That trip included a two-day loop on the front side through higher elevations in CO & UT and the only road that was iffy was Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park, which had been open for less than 48 hours prior to my arrival. They do a pretty good job keeping the roads open and clear, since many of them are the only access to tourist/resort areas. Based on experience; you just need to have a contingency plan, and be prepared to stop and/or backtrack if the weather gets crappy. DAMHIK  :D

Chris - just a couple comments on your plan from having ridden that general area several times in the last few years..

- Avoid Yellowstone on the weekend. It's definitely worth doing, just know it will be impossible to make time that day.
- Make motel arragements for the area around Yellowstone (i.e. Red Lodge, Cooke City, Cody, Jackson or Idaho Falls) well in advance.
- Do go down past the Grand Tetons
- Most of NV and western UT is pretty boring.  I'd skip it in favor of North Central CO or the Sawtooth area of ID

I do this with trepidation, but if Lloyd's brave enough then I guess I should be.
A staged pic for my friends in CA, taken on lunch break in December 1988. That was the bike collection at the time:
1987 CBR1000F Hurricane
1986 Guzzi LeMans Mk IV w/aftermarket fairing & lowers
1980 Guzzi 1000SP

Late model BMW.

Not a good couple of days. An MSTA member from St. Louis perished in Arkansas over the weekend as well
