Motorcycles collide head-on in central Minn., killing both riders

Article by: PAUL WALSH , Star Tribune
    Updated: August 31, 2012 - 11:52 AM

A motorcyclist attempting to pass a vehicle on a central Minnesota road collided head-on with another motorcycle coming the other way, killing both riders, authorities said Friday.

The collision occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday on County Road 4 in Gilmanton Township, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

Dead at the scene a few miles west of Foley were Larry Sorenson, 61, of West Union, Minn., and Patrick Ogg, 52, of Foley, the Sheriff's Office said.

Ogg was heading east on County Road 4 and attempting to pass a vehicle when he struck Sorenson's westbound motorcycle, the Sheriff's Office added.

It is an odd accident.  According to CBS, Ogg was attempting to pass eastbound vehicles on County Road 4, police say, as Sorenson was trying to pass westbound vehicles.

Bummer.  I swear the deer are becoming the most common denominator of the accidents I hear about the last year or so.

I'll try to remove another one of these varmints off the potential threats list in the coming months. I hate the bastards until the bacon-wrapped back strap is on the grill.

This is a tough one for me.  Jim was a fellow rider in our department who serviced my equipment.  The word is that Jim was still upright as he went into the ditch and then struck something while trying to ride the bike back out of the ditch.  Jim and I would discuss helmet use on occasion but his decision, which I do respect, to not wear a helmet is how he rolled.  It's a very sad week for us and I miss him terribly right now.

ID'd: Blaine man who died in motorcycle crash

Article by: PAUL WALSH , Star Tribune
    Updated: September 11, 2012 - 11:26 AM

Authorities on Tuesday identified the man who died in a motorcycle crash while riding with others in east-central Minnesota on a pleasant weekend afternoon.

James W. Kline, 55, of Blaine, was killed when he crashed his motorcycle Saturday afternoon on Cross Lake Road, about a quarter-mile south of Forest Road just east of Pine City, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Kline and the other motorcyclists came to a "curvy area around [Cross Lake], caught part of a ditch and lost control," said Chief Deputy Scott Blackwell of the Pine County Sheriff's Office. No other motorcyclists went down, Blackwell added.

Kline, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken from the scene to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale and died the next day, according to the Pine County Sheriff's Office.
