I took the 911 calls on the above crash.  It turned out much better than I thought it would from the initial reports.

This isn't motorcycle related although I came across the scene not long after it happened while I was out riding.  This incident not only underscores that Hwy 52 continues to be the scariest highway in the state, but also the decision not to wear a seat belt is a roll of the dice that could cost your life in an easily survivable crash.  The Honda Civic was not demolished (it even looked drivable) and the people died because they were ejected.

Dakota County: Crash kills two
By Andy Greder and Emily Cutts
Pioneer Press

Two people were killed in an accident Saturday afternoon in rural Dakota County, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

The State Patrol responded to the accident just after noon on Minnesota 52 at its intersection with East 280th Street, which is a few miles north of Cannon Falls, the State Patrol said.

A Honda Civic, driven by Lui Thein, 21, of St. Paul, was making a turn onto East 280th Street from southbound Minnesota 52 and failed to yield to northbound traffic, according to the State Patrol.

The Civic was broadsided by a Toyota Rav4 driven by Christina Chen, 23, of Rochester, according to the State Patrol. Both vehicles then went into the ditch.

Two passengers in the Civic, La Yin and Naw Wah, both 48 and of St. Paul, were ejected and killed, according to the State Patrol. Neither was wearing a seat belt. A third passenger, Paller Htoo, 18, of St. Paul, was taken to Regions Hospital, according to the State Patrol. Htoo was treated and released from Regions, a hospital spokesman said. Thein was uninjured.

Chen and her passenger, Travis Chen, 17, also of Rochester, were uninjured, according to the State Patrol.

Absolutely.  I am glad the media has begun to report the lack of seat belt use and ejection in these accidents.  Perhaps some are learning from this.

I was just in Cannon Falls today (visiting a friend roughly ten miles south of the city on 52).  What makes 52 scary?  It does not strike me as out of the ordinary for a county highway.

What makes 52 scary?  It does not strike me as out of the ordinary for a county highway.

Highway 52 handles a volume of traffic that rivals any interstate highway in the state, while not classified as a freeway.  There are still literally driveways that exit directly onto this four lane highway.  Think about that for a minute, a highway that bridges the 1st and 2nd most populated cities in the state with the 3rd most populated in the state that has driveway entrances and uncontrolled county road crossings.  The intersection with Goodhue Cty Rd 9 now is the most dangerous in the state and accelerated federal funding to make an overpass.

Having grown up in Zumbrota, I've had the bad luck of having to know many locals that had an "experience" on highway 52.  A neighbor girl who I babysat when I was a teenager was killed near the Edgewood Supper Club intersection.  Two boys, five years younger than me, were killed at the 445th st intersection.  This is a gravel road where people are somehow expected to accelerate in 100 feet to get onto a 65 MPH freeway.

Thankfully MNDOT has recognized this problem and has been replacing the intersections with overpasses the last few years.  Right now they are removing the stop lights at Cannon Falls and putting in an overpass.  The last fatal at the Cty 9 intersection has now motivated more federal funding to get rid of that intersection as well.  But that won't solve the problems of the numerous driveways connected directly to the highway and it would take billions to make this a true limited access freeway.

Motorcycle rider dies in crash on U.S. Highway 53

A 55-year-old Eveleth man died Sunday in a motorcycle-truck collision on U.S. Highway 53 near Eveleth.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported that the man was operating a 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Highway 53 at Bodas Road just before 3 p.m. when it struck an eastbound 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was crossing the highway.

The motorcycle struck the front of the truck. The victim was transported to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth before he died of his injures, the Patrol reported; he was not wearing a helmet. The name of the victim was not released Sunday night pending notification of family.

The driver of the truck, Jesse Hiti, 20, of Eveleth, was not injured.

Neither driver had alcohol in their system, the Patrol reported.

Stoned moped driver tests out her wings

A 20-year-old River Falls woman was arrested for driving under the influence and marijuana possession at 4 a.m. Sunday, July 21, at South Wasson and Cudd Avenue. Driving a Yamaha moped, she pulled up to an officer and was soon giggling hysterically.

The officer asked if she was doing an illegal drugs. After she stopped laughing, the woman allegedly said yes.

Did she have any? Again, yes.

The woman fetched her purse from the moped and fished out a small zippered bag that allegedly held marijuana and a glass pot pipe.

During field sobriety tests, the woman allegedly kept holding out her arms, moving and buzzing as if she were an airplane.

The officer kept asking her to be serious. The woman replied that she would try.

She ended up with a $177 municipal citation for the marijuana. Because this was her second driving under the influence violation, her case will be heard in Pierce County Circuit Court in Ellsworth.
