Minnesota woman injured in motorcycle accident Sunday

A Minnesota woman was injured Sunday afternoon when she was ejected from the motorcycle she was riding on County Highway F in the town of Clifton. - See more at: http://www.piercecountyherald.com/content/minnesota-woman-injured-motorcycle-accident-sunday#sthash.glQADCDT.dpuf

Cheryl Schistad, 54, Harris, was northbound on Hwy. F when she hit a bump in the roadway, causing her to lose control. The motorcycle then slid onto its side, ejecting her. Schistad was traveling through part of Hwy. F that is being resurfaced and the crash did happen in the construction zone, said Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Olson. The accident happened at 4:04 p.m. - See more at: http://www.piercecountyherald.com/content/minnesota-woman-injured-motorcycle-accident-sunday#sthash.glQADCDT.dpuf

Olson said speed and the construction zone appear to be factors in the crash. She was transported to Regions Hospital, where a spokesperson said Monday morning she was in good condition.

Pierce County was assisted by St. Croix County Sheriff's Department, River Falls Ambulance Service, River Falls Fire and Jerry's Towing

Motorcyclist dies in collision with large deer on North Shore highway

Article by: PAUL WALSH , Star Tribune
    Updated: June 27, 2013 - 11:11 AM

A 57-year-old motorcyclist struck a deer shortly after sunset on a North Shore highway and was killed, authorities said Thursday.

Michael L. Johnson, of Duluth, hit the “large deer broadside” shortly before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on northbound Hwy. 61 near Larsmont Road in Two Harbors, according to the State Patrol.

Johnson died the next morning at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, the patrol said. He was not wearing a helmet, the patrol added.

From 2010 through 2012, there have been 16 traffic fatalities in Minnesota involving collisions with deer, according to the state Department of Public Safety (DPS). Only Stearns County, with two, had more than one in that three-year period.

Public safety officials advise motorcyclists to avoid riding at dusk, when deer are on the move. When encountering deer, according to the DPS, use both brakes to stop. If possible, steer carefully and slowly around the deer if there is space.

"From 2010 through 2012, there have been 16 traffic fatalities in Minnesota involving collisions with deer, according to the state Department of Public Safety (DPS)."

This is a disturbing statistic. That's more Minnesotans killed by deer than Killed by the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and all the other militant Islamist groups combined. Our Department of Homeland Security needs to do something about this. We got rid of the buffalo, we can get rid of deer.

Unfortunately deer is a managed resource for the hunting and tourism industry.  The human and insurance cost does not factor into it one bit.

Motorcyclist dies in Apple Valley crash; other driver jailed, suspected of being drunk

Article by: PAUL WALSH , Star Tribune
    Updated: June 28, 2013 - 9:22 AM

A motorcyclist died in a collision at an Apple Valley intersection, and the driver of the other vehicle was arrested on suspicion of being drunk, authorities said Friday.

The crash occurred about 8 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of W. 160th Street and Harwell Avenue W., police said.

The identity of the motorcyclist, a 29-year-old man from Burnsville, was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The driver under arrest is Leah M. Colwell, 44, of Lakeville, and she is being held on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide, third-degree drunken driving, driving on a canceled license and having an open container of alcohol.

Colwell’s criminal history in Minnesota shows earlier convictions for drunken driving.

Colwell was turning in her car from eastbound 160th onto northbound Harwell, when she crossed into the motorcycle’s path, police said.

She was tested at the scene for impairment, leading to her arrest, police added.
