UPDATE: Weekend car-motorcycle accidents injure two in Pierce County

There were injuries from two car-motorcycle accidents which took place this weekend in Pierce County.

The first accident was Friday evening on CTH. CC in El Paso Townships in front of N5271. Jeffery Jilk, 37, River Falls, was pulling his 1999 Nissan Altima into a private drive at around 9:15 p.m. when it was struck by a 1985 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Joseph Whirry, 38, of Spring Valley. Mr. Whirry was ejected from his vehicle and was injured. He was transported by the Elmwood Ambulance Service to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire with undetermined injuries. Mr. Jilk was uninjured. Elmwood Fire and the Pierce County Sheriff's Department were also at the scene of the accident.

Then on Saturday afternoon around 2:51 p.m. on Hwy. 65 at CTH. W in River Falls Township, a car driven by Claire Janovec, 18, River Falls, according to the Sheriff's report, entered the highway in front of a northbound traveling motorcycle driven by Craig Brenner, 50, of Ellsworth. The motorcycle hit the rear corner of the car and went airborne. Brenner was injured and was transported by River Falls Ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. A Regions spokesperson said Monday he was treated and released.  Janovec and her passenger Nicholas Sos, 18, of Hudson, were not hurt. Also at the scene were River Falls Fire and River Falls Police.

Motorcycle racer from Florida dies after hitting 285 mph on runway in Maine

LIMESTONE, Maine — A motorcycle racer trying to top 300 mph died Sunday after losing control and zooming off a runway at a former air base in northern Maine.

Bill Warner, 44, of Wimauma, Fla., was clocked at 285 mph before he lost control but it was unclear how fast the motorcycle was traveling when it veered off the paved runway and crashed, said Tim Kelly, race director the Loring Timing Association, which hosted "The Maine Event" at Loring Air Force Base.

Warner was conscious and talking after the crash just befor 10 a.m., Kelly said, but he died about an hour and 15 minutes later at a hospital in Caribou.

"No one will touch Bill's achievements or be the type of racer he was. He was a personal friend and the land-racing community is less for his loss," Kelly said.

Riding his modified turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa, Warner previously hit 311 mph on the same course in 2011, using 1.5 miles of pavement. That's considered to be the world land speed record for a conventional motorcycle, Kelly said.

This time he was trying to hit 300 mph using just a mile of pavement, and he'd made several passes before the one in which he crashed, Kelly said.

The Maine Event is an annual timed speed event that utilizes the 14,200-foot-long runway at the former Strategic Air Command base that closed in 1994. The Loring Timing Association uses 2.5 miles of the runway for its events, and there's an additional buffer of 2,000 feet, Kelly said.

On Sunday, about 400 spectators watched as Warner began veering right after passing the 1-mile mark, traveling upright for another 2,000 feet before exiting the runway and crashing, Kelly said.

The remainder of Sunday's event was canceled. The Limestone Police Department and Maine State Police were investigation the crash.

http://erstarnews.com/2013/07/08/motorcycle-crash-claims-life-of-man-19/

Elk River Police are investigating a June 27 motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Elk River man.

Erich Kanne, a 2012 graduate of Elk River High School, had been traveling south in the 19400 block of Proctor Road in Elk River shortly before 10:30 p.m. when his 2005 Yamaha left the roadway and collided with a stand of trees.

An off-duty officer who lived in the area heard the crash from his deck and  called 911 before rushing to the scene, according to Elk River Police Capt. Bob Kluntz.

As he approached the roadside he could hear two young women calling for him. They had been following Kanne in separate passenger cars when they came upon a debris-filled stretch along Proctor Road, Kluntz said.

Flags, a cross and other memorabilia mark the crash site in Elk River.
As Megan Schiltz, a 19-year-old Elk River woman and Kanne’s girlfriend,  and her friend Kailey Olsen, 19, of Cambridge, looked into the darkness, the off-duty officer arrived and managed to locate Kanne and his cycle in the ditch. As he began checking for vitals, Elk River Police arrived, followed by an Elk River Ambulance but to no avail. Kanne was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and authorities do not believe he had any alcohol in his system, Kluntz said.

When asked if speed was a factor, Kluntz said it’s hard to tell.

“When a motorcycle goes off the road into a grassy area like this, there are not scuff marks you can see in a surface like asphalt,” he said. “And with it being an older model bike, there’s no black box-like detector device to tell us how fast he was going.”

Schiltz, who was the first to come upon the scene, identified herself as Kanne’s girlfriend. An odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected on her breath while officers were attempting to obtain information from her as a possible witness.

She passed field sobriety tests, and a preliminary breath test revealed a .039 blood alcohol content, according to an incident complaint report. She was cited for minor consumption and underage drinking and driving.

Olsen, who had been following Schiltz, was interviewed and found to have been drinking, too. She also registered a low blood alcohol content level when administered a breath test and was cited for minor consumption and underage drinking and driving.

All three had been at Schiltz’s earlier that night.

“It’s hard to say what happened until we have the results of the investigation,” Kluntz said. “Sometimes we know it was a deer that ran out, or alcohol or another car was involved, but to say anything at this point would be total speculation.

“It’s just a terribly unfortunate and tragic situation,” he said.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Central Lutheran where Kanne was remembered for many things, including his smile and his ability to get others to smile — even if they were mad or going through a difficult situation.

http://www.republican-eagle.com/content/three-crashes-one-fatal-reported-sunday

A West Concord, Minn., man was killed Sunday evening when his motorcycle struck a road sign, Goodhue County Sheriff's Office reported.

Raymond Bartz, 55, was westbound on County Road 11 in Cherry Grove Township when his cycle went off a sharp curve and struck a sign at about 6:45 p.m. Bartz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office will be performing an autopsy and the State Patrol will do a reconstruction of the accident. Alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor in the crash; Bartz was wearing a helmet.

Zumbrota Ambulance and Wanamingo First Responders assisted at the scene.
