Speed seems to be factor in fatal motorcycle crash

Authorities say speed seems to be a major factor in a motorcycle crash that claimed the life of one man.

The Brown County Sheriff's Department says the accident happened about 11:30 Friday night on U.S. Highway 41 in the village of Howard. The crash happened when the motorcyclist hit a concrete barrier. He was thrown from his bike, then apparently struck by several vehicles.

Officials say the man was seen traveling at a high rate of speed just before the crash.

No one else was injured. A portion of Highway 41 was shut down for about five hours.

The man's name hasn't been released.

Motorcyclist injured in crash north of Duluth
A 33-year-old Gnesen Township man was injured early Sunday morning in a motorcycle crash north of Duluth.

By: News Tribune staff, Duluth News Tribune

A 33-year-old Gnesen Township man was injured early Sunday morning in a motorcycle crash north of Duluth.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that Zeboriah Fish apparently was traveling northbound on Rice Lake Road just after 12:30 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve, hit two mailboxes and was thrown from the motorcycle into the ditch on the east side of the road.

Fish was found by passersby; the crash happened near Island Lake, in the 6900 block of Rice Lake Road. The sheriff’s office said officials believe Fish was wearing a helmet.

Fish was treated at the scene by Gnesen Fire Department personnel and transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. Luke’s hospital with what the sheriff’s office reported were possibly life-threatening injuries. An update on his condition was not available later Sunday.

The sheriff’s office said alcohol and excessive speed may be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Zeboriah is a name I have not heard before.

There seems to be way too many accidents of riders hitting vehicles turning into driveways!

Motorcycle versus tractor

Lake Elmo boy, 9, who rode bike into motorcycle on shoulder dies from injuries

Article by: PAUL WALSH , Star Tribune
    Updated: September 13, 2013 - 8:47 PM

Schoolmates are mourning the death of a 9-year-old Lake Elmo boy who rode his bicycle into a motorcycle that was stopping along the shoulder of the highway outside the child’s home to deal with a mechanical difficulty.

Parent of students at Red Rock Elementary School in Woodbury received notice that a new student, fourth-grader Pierre LeQue, “was recently taken off of life support. … We hope you receive this message and are able to support your child at home, as the staff at Red Rock is doing during the school day.”

The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4, when Pierre rode out from his family’s driveway and collided with a Harley-Davidson that was on the shoulder of westbound Hwy. 5 because of “a mechanical issue,” according to the State Patrol.

Family friend Ben Charles said Friday that the motorcycle was still moving at the time of impact, but the patrol report was unclear on that detail.

Pierre was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. The funeral home handling arrangements said he died Wednesday.

The motorcycle’s owner, Michael D. Lehman, 46, of Lake Elmo, was not hurt, the patrol said.

Pierre and his family had moved less than three months ago from Eau Claire, Wis., said Kelli Espiritu, whose Halos for Hudson organization helps survivors cope with the loss of a child.

Charles said Pierre’s heart has been donated to a 2-year-old and his liver to an 11-year-old. “He had a big heart,” Charles said, “and he loved to help people.”

The school said that visitation has been set for 4-8 p.m. Sunday at CullenCrea Funeral Home in New Richmond, Wis., with services scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, also in New Richmond.

St. Paul motorcyclist, 92, dies in hit-and-run accident

    Article by: NICOLE NORFLEET
    Updated: September 13, 2013 - 10:20 PM

The lifelong East Sider heading to his daily walk at Maplewood Mall died hours after he was struck.

At 92, Roy Kromschroeder wasn’t ready to slow down. He loved spending time outdoors, whether on his motorcycle or in his camper, and walked laps every day at Maplewood Mall.

On Friday morning, Kromschroeder was riding his motorcycle to the mall for his daily walk when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver at a St. Paul intersection. He died later that afternoon.

“His life was cut very short,” said his daughter-in-law, Sherry Kromschroeder of Lake Elmo. “That man would have been around to 100.”

According to police, Roy Kromschroeder was driving his Honda motorcycle about 7:45 a.m. at Prosperity and Ivy Avenues when he was hit by a sport-utility vehicle.

Police said the 26-year-old woman driving the SUV stopped momentarily and then fled the scene after the collision but was later arrested in Vadnais Heights. She was cooperating with police, said Howie Padilla, a spokesman for the St. Paul police.

“At this time we aren’t going to speculate on the cause of this accident,” he said.

A witness, Kenlyn Kjesbo of St. Paul, was stopped behind a garbage truck at the intersection Friday morning when she saw a helmet fly into view. The man driving the garbage truck got out and then motioned for her to help him, Kjesbo said.

She saw Kromschroeder on the ground shaking and unconscious, his helmet resting several feet away, she said. The license plate from the vehicle that hit him was embedded in the mangled motorcycle.

While Kjesbo called 911, others grabbed blankets to cover Kromschroeder. A couple of people directed traffic around the accident before authorities arrived.

“This guy was clearly very injured,” Kjesbo said. “We did the best that we could.”

Kjesbo said it was comforting to see so many residents help at the scene.

“He seemed like he must have been very vital and enjoying himself to be riding a motorcycle at 92,” she said of Kromschroeder, adding that he looked younger than his age.

Kromschroeder was a lifelong St. Paul resident. The grandson of Swiss immigrants, he raised his family in the same East Side home he was born in on E. 6th Street. Kromschroeder had two sons and a daughter.

He served in the Coast Guard during World War II and this year participated in the Minnesota Honor Flight in which veterans are flown to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., said his daughter, Jan Braaten of Oakdale.

In 1979, Kromschroeder retired from his job as a supervisor at the 3M plant on the East Side.

Kromschroeder was a licensed commercial pilot and loved to ride his motorcycle. He used to travel the country in a camper with his bike, along with his wife of 68 years, Lorraine, who died in 2011, Braaten said.

“I think that being on the motorcycle made him feel free,” she said. “He was really in better shape than I was.”

A sad accident, but good for him to be out riding.
