General Banter / Re: "Street" Line
« on: April 24, 2012, 09:05:52 AM »
By definition the motorcycle has crossed the center line. Is he riding over his head, not even close.
I searched for local statutes and can't find that MN defines the tires as the definition of what is (or is not) considered to be "within the lane".   Are you aware of other statutes that clarify?   https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=169.18&year=2011

Without clear statute, any officer can make a determination of what is part of the vehicle.

In case there is any confusion, my original post was about the advertising value of the picture when a stated goal of this website is to attract new MSTA members.   I believe that in some corners the safest way around is across the yellow (for example when there is sand in your lane).  However, I don't care to cross the line when there is no reason to.  I enjoy riding curvy roads and find I have a tendency to try to straighten them if I ride them too fast. My observations in group rides is that speed wins out over precision sometimes and then we tend to see the bikes hang over the yellow.

Hope, some smaller bikes top out at higher speeds in 5th (vs. 6th).  It has to do with more torque in 5th.   Also, you need to lay down on the tank, pull your knees in and make yourself as small as possible.   Wind and hills help, but are not necessary.

Ooohhhh nice.  Personally I prefer the bumblebee colors.   Priced a bit steep for just playing with.

I prefer "cool kids" and "dweebs" (please no nerds - too close to home for me).

I feel that Ray (and other moderators) should have permission to give vacations of increasing length based on severity of "lack of civility" and frequency of being uncivil.  If the moderatos are individually unsure of a particular person's posts, then they can poll each other through email.

No, I am not a moderator.

If the goal is to build MN MSTA and this is our front window, someone does actually have to decide what is appropriate.  If it is a group of people, some whom happen to be members of MSTA, then there is less need to "keep up appearances".

Even if someone "tells it as I see it" and says they "don't suffer fools", if the goal is civility (with an occasional dig for fun), then we have a standard that should be enforceable.   No, not everyone will agree, but I for one don't like the personal attacks (even if the observations and conclusions are in alignment with my view).

Make it so!

Can someone create a fake account for "MN-MSTA karma" so we can all smite it out of existence?

It is just as useless as the popularity crap that goes on in junior high school.

Smite away!!!!

Safety and Riding Tips / Re: Sharing Safety "Moments"
« on: April 04, 2012, 01:59:22 PM »
I agree that there is merit in rehashing the accident IF the rider has an open mind.  I will give you an example...

I was at the front straight fence at DCTC for a RidersCourse day.   I was watching the "Rowdy" group ride.   One CRA racer came into the corner on a totally different line (turning in super early and having to straighten up his line).   He then had to turn really hard and the bike low sided.   Later I went to see how he was and ask him if he knew what happened.   He said his tires had gone off.   I told him what I had seen and he could not hear it.   Somehow blaming his tires was acceptable to his view of his ability where as making a mistake on his line was something he could not imagine.

What are the lessons?
1) listen to what others tell you even if there is no video
2) everyone knows that blaming your tires is the sportbiker equivalent of "I had to lay her down"
3) don't post an accident if you have already reached your conclusion of what happened

Safety and Riding Tips / Re: Rider Signals when Group Riding
« on: April 03, 2012, 10:06:11 PM »
Ian, I understand what you're saying about not relying on others for signals, but I'm curious: when riding ahead of others do you point out roadkill/deer/farm equipment if you come up on it?
I also will tap my brakes several times if I have to slow unexpectedly or there is a major hazard like a tractor in the road.  Brake lights are the best warning signal out there in my opinion.
That is the answer I would have offered

I may be the odd one out, but I feel that "ride your own ride" entails that you navigate the visual terain and not depend on your co-riders warnign of cops, oncoming cars, etc.

Having said that there is one that I use which doesn't require taking hands of the bars.   If I do a safe pass and can see more of the oncoming lane than the riders behind me, I will stay in the opposite lane to give the following riders a better feel for how clear the oncoming lane is.  Then they can pass and we can keep the group together.

"Careful", I agree.

However, "Careful" + on-purpose skill practice/training = "Safe"

PS.  I'm really liking the new dialogue that seems to be coming into the group.  Keeping a positive, open mind to riding better and smarter will only benefit all of us.
+1000, I really appreciate the hard work and thought people are putting into building a community with a common interest.

General Banter / Re: Vin Number??

Yes.  I did a Google search on every permutation of that number and nothing popped up as stolen.  How does the title look?
