If the wolf population gets established like it is up north, the deer problem will pretty much go away.  Up by Thief River Falls, the deer population went from approx 20/sq mile to less than 5 in a matter of a couple years once the wolves moved in.

I doubt wolves will be hanging out in SE MN though.  Farmland is not their natural habitat and the density of humans is too high.  Doesn't mean they wouldn't try, though I'd expect wolves to spread into the Canadian woods first.   I'd be afraid of deer migrating from the north down to the south part of the state to avoid wolves.

IncidentDescription:    VEHICLE WAS WESTBOUND WHEN DRIVER THOUGHT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BACK TIRE. WHEN HE TURNED TO LOOK HE LOST CONTROL, RAN OFF THE ROAD TO THE RIGHT AND ROLLED. DRIVER WAS EJECTED.

it just struck me a little comical, not slowing down and stopping to look. i would have to do that, cause i know I'm not that talented. lol

They actually taught in an ERC once what happens when you turn your head to look backwards.  You automatically push down on the opposite handlebar then the side you are looking....oops....so don't do that.

It is just amazing how many of these crashes are caused by deer. These pests should be confined to preserves like is done with bison. Certainly we have the capability to shrink the deer population 95%.
It just takes the political will which is sadly lacking these days.

Support your local deer poacher.

+ a million

I've seen deer everywhere lately. Used to think they came out at dusk but have seen more of them mid-day around noon lately than any other time. Maybe I need to take up deer hunting!

When its hot like it has been deer will move around more, which is probably why you're seeing them more.

Motorcyclists injured in Thursday crash

July 27, 2012 12:00 am  •  Daily News staff

A Wisconsin man suffered critical injuries in a motorcycle collision Thursday morning in Winona.

Gary L. Olson, 63, of Wausau was westbound on U.S. Hwy. 61 about 9 a.m. when he collided at the Hwy. 43 intersection with a northbound Subaru driven by Mary Andress, 63, of Fountain City, Wis., according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Andress was not injured in the crash.

Olson was taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon. His passenger and wife, Rhonda Olson, 59, was transported to Winona Health with injuries that were not life-threatening, the patrol said. Neither Olson was wearing a helmet.

It was unknown Thursday what caused the crash, but alcohol was not believed to be a factor. The incident remains under investigation. The Winona Police Department assisted.

I have a feeling you'll be reading about Ernest again someday.  His record already proves he is short on brains and long on trouble-making days.

Motorcyclist who struck child to be released, pay restitution

Article by: ANTHONY LONETREE , Star Tribune
    Updated: August 6, 2012 - 3:33 PM

Ernest T. Jonas struck boy after popping wheelies on a St. Paul street, authorities say.

A St. Paul motorcyclist who pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run that critically injured a 4-year-old boy last May is expected to be released from jail Tuesday, under a sentence handed down Monday.

Ernest T. Jonas, 25, also was ordered by Ramsey County District Judge J. Thomas Mott to pay restitution in an amount that will be determined later.

The victim's mother called the sentence "stupid."

Jonas had no driver's license and six recent driving-related offenses when he struck Tyrell Baymon on a Frogtown area street on May 19. State sentencing guidelines called for a stayed prison sentence of 18 months and up to a year in jail -- a term urged Monday by prosecutor Laura Rosenthal.

But Mott sided with the county probation department's recommendation of 120 days in jail, or 80 days in custody, given that defendants typically serve two-thirds of their sentences behind bars. With Jonas already having served 79 days, the sentence left him with only one more day in jail.

Jonas told the judge he was sorry for the damage he had caused.

Tyrell's mother, Marcia Scroggins, who did not speak in court, said after the sentencing that state lawmakers should revamp laws in such cases to require tougher sentences.

Asked if she believed Jonas had learned his lesson, she said: "He's only 25. He don't care."

Scroggins said that her son, whose hand she was holding just before he was struck, had to be hospitalized from May 19 to June 29, and still is in the process of recovering. Tyrell walks with a limp and is sickly, often susceptible to motion sickness while riding in a car, she said.

"Thank God he's only 4," she added, referring to his prospects for recovery. "I'm just blessed that he's still here with me."

I've been seeing this one a few times lately.  Please, if you are impatient by a vehicle slowing in front of you, consider that they may be making a turn!

Eagan motorcyclist dies in crash in South Dakota

A 41-year-old man from Eagan died Saturday when his motorcycle hit a car carrying a trailer in central South Dakota's Hughes County, according to the South Dakota State Patrol.

Maksim Deminov's Harley was headed east on Hwy. 14 just east of Blunt, S.D., when he came up behind the trailer, which was being pulled by a pickup driven by Quanna Hager, 52, of Blunt. As Hager slowed in preparation for a left turn, Deminov tried to pass her, hitting the trailer.

The accident happened just after 2 p.m. Saturday. The patrol did not say whether Hager's trailer had turn lights or whether Deminov was wearing a helmet.
