Oh, I didn't realize this was Dave.  His account said Gold Wing, Sheriff report says Road Star (Yamaha makes those.)

Good lesson there, don't trust barrels or markers at construction zones.  Keep the speed down and use the high beams as needed.

Wow, interesting story that also really shows me that what is posted from wherever PKPK is getting it doesn't really give me anything with which to assess the situations being "reported"!

Those are preliminary filings of an incident from the MNDPS/State Patrol. website.  You generally will not find much detailed witness or first hand statements in these filings.

But they do report the road conditions at the time of the crash, whether other vehicles are involved, helmet use and time of day.  I find that information interesting, but then I'm sort of a mundane details geek anyway.  You generally won't find anything that might wind up being in a court case or insurance report.  Dave offered up a rare first person account of his crash on the web, but you generally won't run into that often.

By the way, you might think I have scaled back my postings but the truth is there has been an incredible lull in motorcycle incidents since all the media attention 3 weeks back.  Obviously a good thing but I wonder if the heavy rains and higher than normal temps are playing a role (and not really motorcyclists being more careful and cage drivers being less distracted.)

I find it interesting that Dave's accident doesn't actually involve the type of motorcycle listed and certainly "failed to negotiate corner" in his case is a far cry from what I would imagine happened based on that description.  I'm pointing that out because we were pretty harsh on that group of bikes that fell down on the exit ramp with passengers using this same preliminary (inadequate?) data from the MNDPS/State Patrol website.  I believe his situation is a clear indication that we'd be foolish (in my opinion) to assess/judge/critique (dare I say "learn"?) from these reports.  I'm glad you post them (and other stories), I was surprised to find out how mistake-prone my assumptions were in this case.

You do make an excellent point and I think the speculation has been muted on most of the filings.  However in the case of the riders who crashed on the entrance (not exit) ramp, it's hard to imagine any other scenario but the stated (too closely spaced and not looking through the turn) that led to the chortling postings.  I'll post the key line for some context:

"4 BIKES 8 PEOPLE TRAVELING WB HWY 14 ENTRANCE RAMP TO HWY 169 SB. TRAFFIC SLOWING AT BOTTOM OF THE RAMP. ALL 4 DRIVERS LOST CONTROL AND TIPPED BIKES OVER ATTEMPTING TO AVOID COLLISION."

Detroit Lakes man dies in motorcycle crash; victim of Saturday crash identified

    Updated: July 1, 2012 - 7:08 PM

A 20-year-old man from Detroit Lakes, Minn., died early Sunday after his motorcycle ran off the road in Otter Tail County, in west-central Minnesota, and rolled over, according to the State Patrol.

The motorcyclist was headed west on Hwy. 10 west of Hwy. 78 just after 5:30 a.m. when he entered the median and rolled over, the patrol said. The cyclist, whose name has not been released, was thrown from his bike and died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, the patrols said.

Also Sunday, authorities identified a 34-year-old Otsego woman killed shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday when the car she was driving collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of County Road 50 and Vernon Street in Greenfield, in northwestern Hennepin County.

She was Victoria Jean Dorkins, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner.

The 23-year-old man driving the truck was taken by ambulance to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale with minor injuries, the Sheriff's Office said. A 21-year-old man who was a passenger in the truck was not hurt.

The State Patrol and the Sheriff's Office are investigating the crash.

Two vehicles and a motorcycle were involved in a crash on Highway 10 just west of Prescott Sunday afternoon, June 24.

According to the State Patrol, a vehicle on eastbound Highway 10 was stopped and waiting to turn into the beach parking lot at Point Douglas Park. The vehicle was rear-ended by another eastbound vehicle and was pushed into the path of a westbound motorcycle. The motorcycle crashed into the car that had been waiting to turn.

Three occupants in the vehicle that was rear-ended reported non-life-threatening injuries, as did the driver of the motorcycle. The driver who rear-ended the vehicle waiting to turn was cited for inattentive driving.

The crash occurred at 5:05 p.m.

So this guy slams into a left turning car from behind injuring three in the car. The force of the impact propels the left turning car into oncoming traffic and hits a motorcycle, injuring the rider. All this and the guy only gets an"inattentive driving" citation? That fine is probably less than $150. They should have cited him for careless or wreckless driving imo.
